When you ask people what you think when word “pharmacist” come to your mind? They often say pharmacist have to deal with variety of legal drugs. From my personal opinion, when I hear the word “Pharmacist”, I think of helping others. This inspiration came from my Health Science class I took in twelve grade. Until senior year of my high school, I did not know what I wanted to be. But it all changed, after my first shadowing experience at pharmacist station. There I learn about what exactly the pharmacist career is about, what are some of the equipments used in the field and how I can contribute the knowledge I receive here to help others.

The pharmacist was very friendly because he would listen to every bit of information given by the customers. In pharmacy field, it is important to be organized at job area, since there is lot of medications you have to deal with. If the pharmacist its not responsible for his work, then he will accidentally messed up and will give the medicines it to the wrong person. Keeping this in mind, I observe the pharmacist at shadowing station and he was perfect at his job. He check the label on the medicines twice before giving out to the customers to make sure his giving it to the right person. Watching this I was surprised because I learn that, whenever you do something, check and ask yourself “whatever I am doing, is it right ? .” Next, I learn how important is to keep good relationships with the people your working with. At shadowing station, the pharmacy technician was great supporter to the pharmacist because pharmacy technician manage the area of dosages, labeling, and medication dispensing. Mainly observing the pharmacist I feel that they care about the patients because when I saw the patients facial expressions, the patients felt trustworthy on the pharmacist.

Therefore shadowing few times in high school will come handy, when I become pharmacist because I learn how to use instruments that are use on day to day basis in pharmacist. The most important equipment I got to look at while I shadow was “Tablet Counting Machine”. Since, pharmacist job is to fill medical prescription; the best tool they can use is “Tablet Counting Machine” because this machines count the pills accurately and quickly without wasting time. As a student in SDSU’s pharmacy program one of the activities required to prepare us for real world pharmacy practice would be to shadow a staff pharmacist at the Jackrabbits pharmacy on the SDSU campus. I have had previous work experience in a community pharmacy and there are some unique features which makes Jackrabbits pharmacy stick out.
The relationship and the connections built with the patients and other members of the team, made me realise that this is the sector that I want to work in for my career. During this pharmacy role, I was introduced to tasks that are carried out by a physician associate; this included taking medical histories for the pharmacist before he gave specific injections or before I carried out the glucose, cholesterol or blood pressure test. Working at Britannia Pharmacy introduced me to many disorders as I had direct contact with patients and doctors/ general practitioners. Alongside my undergraduate degree, I also worked in a retail store which allowed me to develop some vital skills required for my chosen field such as teamwork, communication and leadership whilst also gaining knowledge about disorders, the biology and drugs. Studying psychological therapies enabled me to increase my skills as well gain an insight into the mental disorders that can arise alongside the physical health.
This introduced a different side of the pharmacy field where a strong interaction with the public is substantial. As a pharmacy techician, I worked to support pharmacists in greeting patients with prescription orders, processing insurance paperwork, and answering questions and requests. I learned to be patient and resourceful, but constrained in my ability to give medical advice as often times patients ask for advice. Also, this job allowed me the opportunity to learn from pharmacists as they prepare prescriptions, provide advices to doctors and help patients with the most cost effective medications. Nonetheless, the most rewarding aspect of this job has been my ability to assist patients and conversing with them on personal level, ranging from trivial topics like how their days go or casual chats about the recent daily events, to their history of medical troubles. This job has definitely provided me with the real-world experience needed to be successful in the pharmacy field and improved my customer service

Getting admitted to the Pharm. D. program is the first big step toward my dream. The opportunities it provides is beyond my belief. The program fully emphasizes the assessment process and is molded by different electives in order to fit each student’s interest. Not only it will prepare me to obtain a license to practice, it will also shape who I will be in the future. I want to treat people and give them the same feeling of family warmth Dr. Lin gave me during my childhood, and even to become someone who can change the current pharmacy issue in Taiwan. Since my early schooling days, science and mathematics have always fascinated me given that all components of the world are explained on the basis of these disciplines. In this regard, Pharmacy which is based on Chemistry and Mathematics has interested me a great deal as it has direct impacts on our daily lives. The more I have become familiar with the chemistry and mathematics knowledge involved in pharmacy, the more I have appreciated its significance in improving the lives of people in the community. Out of the many careers that one would opt to pursue, Pharmacy has stood out as the career that will enable me serve the society more directly and have a real impact in the quality of peoples’ lives by touching their health. In addition, I love a career that is challenging and one that I will be involved in even in old age. In this case, Pharmacy offers me this opportunity. My interest in Pharmacy has also developed from my personal health experiences and becoming aware of its expansiveness. Every time I have had to take medicine to cure an illness, I have become more interested to know how drugs are made and how the drug components work in the human body to alleviate pain and restore health. I desire to pursue a career in Pharmacy so as to gain practical experience in these aspects of research.
I chose my past career pharmacy technician. A pharmacy technician assists the pharmacist in filling prescriptions for the patient. There are many different settings and positions in this career. My favorite is the inpatient hospital setting. The technicians prepare IVs, patient medicine trays, and sometimes packages them in the pharmacy so the nurse is able to scan the medications. Other settings include, retail pharmacy where one would interact with the customers, and the main job is to fill the prescription bottles, and sometimes mix up creams in the compounding lab.
I realize how crucial the dispensation of drugs is because I saw a death of a young boy by taking wrong medication couples years ago. Therefore, I applied for a career in pharmacy to understand more about the dispensing process. Amazingly, I was offered a pharmacy technician position at CVS pharmacy. My life has become more interesting and challenging from that day.
The importance of the becoming a pharmacist should not be about what the career can give a person in monetary value or the amount of accolades one receives. Instead, the career should be about saving and improving human lives and serving the public. Pharmacists keep people healthy, make them feel better, and try to help the public live longer and happier lives as long as possible. From small infant children to the elderly, everyone needs pharmaceutical care. Sometimes it can be a matter of life and death if medication is not available to the public. Pharmacy as a career would be a wise decision if a person could withstand the amount of education the profession entails.
I pleased to apply to the PharmD program as the program is one area that corresponds to my career dreams. Being part of this program gives one the opportunity to gain an excellent experience in working and collaborating with various health care providers in the ward. Firstly, the main role of a pharmacist is to dispense medicines to their patients according to the prescription given. Before this, they have to ensure that they delivering the right drug, the strength and dosage of the medicine are appropriate, as well as ensuring the medication is safety and can work effectively in the human body. Like every career, pharmacists have certain qualities and skills. I feel that I fit many qualities of pharmacists, including an attention to detail, communication skills, and science and mathematic skills. I have also been a perfectionist, paying attention to each detail of my work. This is what helped me stay organized throughout high school, and earn a 4.021 cumulative GPA. Pharmacists must be detail-orientated to ensure their patients receive the right dosage, amount, and type of medication. An error in this could harm the patient, therefore breaking the Hippocratic oath. Furthermore, a pharmacist must pay attention to the patient’s other prescriptions and medical history to avoid any negative reactions. Next, I have earned strong customer service and communication skills from my job at Fareway Food Stores. Since I earned this job in May 2012, I have made it one of my goals to assist and brighten the day of my customers.
