My Ethical Code

For most people, media is an integral part of everyday life. Whether this be social updates on twitter and facebook or watching reality television shows, almost everybody does it. For this reason it is important to look at these sources of media ethically to see what is wrong and what is right. In my own life, I try to stray away from media as much as I can for my own personal purposes, but I do find myself tweeting and watching reality T.V. from time to time. Now that I have created my own satisfactory ethical code I can analyze the way I include it into my media usage.

First, I would like to define what my satisfactory ethical code is. My code is a mixture of the utilitarianism approach combined with features from ethics of care. The base of this code is Utilitarianism based on the fact that it tries to create the most happiness to non-happiness within a group of people. Depending on the situation I will switch between act utilitarianism and rule utilitarianism at my own will to do what is overall the best option. Since there are many problems present in the utilitarianism approach like the exclusion of personal relationships I also like to use ethics of care since my own personal relationships are so important to me. The first thing I will analyze is my social media. Although there are many different types of social media, I primarily use a website called Imgur and seldomly twitter. For both of these media sharing devices I use them more as a source of information and entertainment than I do creation. Since I rarely post anything on either of these sites it's hard for me to offend my satisfactory ethical code since I am not decreasing overall happiness and I don’t affect anyone that is close to me. When I do post I try to make them primarily funny and non-offensive, but this is a hard thing to do which is why I rarely post in the first
