Introduction Learning about different cultures can be fun and exciting. Throughout life I never thought I had any culture at all until I started thinking about all the things I was taught. Culture has shaped me in every way possible. The way I dress, speak, learn, and communicate are all examples. Throughout the paper I’ll be explaining all of the things that influenced my life, and how I’ve changed. Cultural Identity My culture has been mostly influenced by my mother and her side of the family. My maternal great grandparents immigrated to the United States from Croatia. My maternal grandmother was full Croatian and my maternal grandfather was full German. My paternal grandparents are German and Norwegian. Over the years I’ve been asked about my ethnic background. When people started to ask about where I came from I turned to my mom to give me an explanation. I have tan skin, brunette hair, and almost black eyes. Everyone that has been married in my extended family has put on a really big weddings. Something that I’ve always liked is that the whole family has helped with the planning and preparations. For example, for my all of my cousins that have been married my mom has always made the floral arrangements. It’s always been a great experience to help make the day really special for the bride and groom. White Privilege Checklist The United States has made great strides in becoming more equal, but it’s not quite there yet. The white privilege checklist brings to light many aspects of the difficulties being a different race. A personal favorite example is being able to find make-up matching my skin tone. As a woman that buys cosmetics I’ve seen firsthand the limited color choices for anyone having a darker completion. All of the items on the checklist are a good reminder of the difficulties someone of a different skin color can face. Changing of
