My Clinical Experience Essay

This week’s clinical is full of mentally conflicts. First of all, I am excited to have one day of clinical for this week, so I can have more time to study for the exam that is coming up next week. On the other hand, I don’t want to lose the opportunity to learn new skills from my clinical day. Finally, I have been thinking about my patient from last week every day, I don’t know whether I get to see them again this week. Like I have stated before, every time I feel excited when it comes to clinical because I don’t know what I will be encounter or what I will be doing for that day. One is when feeding patient, it is very important to make sure the patient is not having the potential of aspiration. When patient cannot use their hands to adjust the flow of the liquid or food that goes into their mouth, it is very easy for them to choke. I needed to make sure that the patient’s head is at 90 degree to help them facilitate the liquid or food down. Just like I have learned from my textbook, I needed to stop feeding until the patient have swallow the liquid or food safely before I continues with the next feeding. This action will ensure my patient’s safety because ensure patient’s safety is one of the important task for a nurse. Another thing I learned from this week’s clinical experiences is the importance of being professional. No matter how embarrass I may feel, I needed to put my personal feeling aside and perform the task professionally to ensure my patient’s integrity. I also understand my patient care skills at this point are not sufficient enough for me to perform confidently. I planned to continues to learn patient center care by observe other professional nurses when they take care of their patients; I will continues to ask questions when I don’t know the answer to my patient care; I will continues to study my textbook for better ways to perform patient center care. This way I can learn more skills and feel more confidence when I take care of my patients. Besides that, I also understand there will always be challenge when it comes to patient care because each patient is very different; but I believe I can improve my professional nursing practice as long as I have the determination to learn and eliminate any challenge that comes in my way.
