Despite some popular images of Muslim women as repressed and oppressed, many women today are actively affirming the rights and responsibilities that they believe the Qur'an affords to them. The Holy Book affirms that men and women are created from one soul to be partners to each other, that males and females have the same religious responsibilities, and that both genders will receive like rewards on the day of judgment.
The role of men and women as stated in the Quran verse 51:49 goes: “And of all things We created two mates; perhaps you will remember.” Muslims believe this means people were created to live in pairs, and that one cannot live without the other. In addition to that, female and male mates must complement each other by being opposites. Since this is the case, women take the role of working in the home and men in the outside world. An important thing to remember is that home and family is at the center of the Islamic religion. Therefore, a man’s work cannot be more important than the female’s role. The Prophet Muhammad said, “Seeking of knowledge is a duty of every Muslim.” So, Islamic girls and boys should both be allowed to go to school, right? If someone who calls themselves a Muslim cannot say unless they have a personal bias, that a female should not be allowed to go to school. The reason why this does not happen is not because of the religion, but because of society. The founder of Islam himself stated that every Muslim should seek education. To go against that is to go against the religion itself.
