Introduction to Music Upon examining what the music industry is, you see five main job types. These include the songwriter, the music manager, the marketing manager, the music publisher, and the music producer. Each job type has many different tasks and salaries which make each job unique. The major thing to take from this is that each job and person builds on each other.
The first job type that the music industry includes is the songwriter. The songwriter writes songs for solo artists, bands, and other performers to interpret. Songwriters also write songs for jingles and commercial ads. Their process usually starts with writing lyrics and then after the words are written, they put melodies on top of it. Among other things, songwriters must know how to play keyboard, drums, guitars, and other instruments used in making music. This person brings together and coordinates the people and projects for a band or group. They are the one behind the scenes making sure the group or band is taken care of. The music manager must have an extensive knowledge of the music industry, which generally means that this is not an entry level position. The majority of manager start as artists, audio engineers, assistants, or promoters and work their way up through the pyramid. Two qualities that music managers must have is good organizational skills and be great with people. One major role that these managers play is the phone guru. Most of the time, they communicate with publicity agents, event promoters, and talent agencies all for their clients. Being a music manager does mean that they receive a median salary of approximately $64k a year. This is a major role that must be played correctly, otherwise their clients would not succeed in their own music
