Music Education Philosophy Essay

My main philosophy of music education is not only helping the student become a great musician, but a great, well-rounded, person as well. But in order to do that there are multiple aspects that have to be carefully thought out and planned. Such aspects can be, who I can teach, what shall I teach, the type of environment I want my class to partake in and concrete ideas of specific pedagogies to be applied.
Who shall we, as teachers, teach is a very simple question, that has a simple response to go along with it. Teachers should teach anyone and everyone who is willing to be taught and to learn from them. The idea that music education is only for grade students is outrageous, music education is for everyone, even for the pre-kindergarten kids and right up with senior citizens. But, the most important thing, is that the person or group needs to be open to be taught and to learn from the teacher. If they are not willing then it will be hard to try your best to have a positive impact on their lives through music education, and that goes with any other type of education as well. Knowing what you should teach is very important, but it should not feel like a guide line that you must constantly stick with. While the traditional, teaching students how to read, sing and perform music in choral, solo, theatre, or instrumental setting is important, there is so much more that you can teach a student that is not in the assigned text book, or lesson during class. I believe that while teaching the basics of music education is very important, other topics such as concert attire, proper concert etiquette, life lessons etc., are just as important for the student to get a full and proper education that involves music.
