Music is “vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.” Music has been a big part of my life since before I was born. Music has influenced me in many big ways. I’ve created, reproduced, and listened to music. Music is more than just notes on a page, it is an experience to last a lifetime.
I began listening to music at a very young age, and I have heard music since before I was born. Over the years, I have listened to countless hours of music; music to celebrate special occasions, or music simply for listening pleasure. Since my friend introduced them to me in middle school, Coldplay has been my favorite band for several years now. The first song I ever heard from Coldplay was “Viva la Vida”. I initially thought the song was called “When I Ruled the World”, but I eventually figured out this was incorrect. Ever since then, I have listened to nearly all of the albums released by Coldplay. I have listened to many of their songs too many times to count. Their most recent song, “Amazing Day”, debuted live on Saturday, September 26th at the Global Citizen Festival in Central Park. My first experience with a musical production was watching my older brother perform “Guys and Dolls” when he was in middle school (as Nathan Detroit). I acted in a few musicals in my younger years, and helped produce the high school’s Godspell musical this past spring. When I was a kid, my first musical was Power. I held a part in this play as part of the chorus. Later, I played the disciple Peter in another church musical. Although these were not major roles, they still had a big impact on my theater skills. I went on to join the drama club in Middle School. We performed several plays such as “Christmas in Oz”, “Shakespeare Goes to Gravel Gulch”, “Law and Order: Nursery Rhymes

Rock n’ Roll is a type of music that came about in the late 50’s. Before that, there was no music that resembled Rock n’ Roll; instead, folk and other genres dominated. Then the Korean War ended. Shortly thereafter, the Vietnam War began, and with it came a new type of music, featuring hateful songs and concerts. Music is something that I believe we could not live without. There is a quote by a philosopher named Friedrich Nietzschethat says “without music, life would be a mistake”. I interpret this to mean that humans would not be creative if it were not for music. There is a reason that music can take us where word cannot. When you hear so many different sounds coming together to make a perfect harmony it is obvious that no words can make you feel the same way as the music. To put that into simpler terms, sound is manufactured when an object moves and creates friction to make vibrations.
Music has always been a big part of my life. Music is not just a bunch of melodies, rhythms, and vibrant sounds. It is a comfort to me. The lyrics of a song challenge my intellect and the rhythms and beats affect my emotions. Music understands me when people don’t. At times it takes me back to an event in my life or even in history. Both consciously and subconsciously my mind remembers the emotions that are attached to a certain song. It can make me feel on top of the world or the complete opposite; music can change the atmosphere and also set the mood. Music has power over my human soul. It soothes it. I cannot imagine not having music to listen to. It is a powerful force and my love for it is incredible.
