Revisiting Childhood Wonder: A Day at Iowa's Natural History Museum

The Museum of Natural History at the University of Iowa campus is located in the Iowa Hall of the McBride Building on the Pentacrest Area of the university. On Friday afternoon of February 20th, I arrived at the museum and found few visitors which made the exhibits easily accessible. Since I was a child, I have been going to the museum since it is a favorite of my parents. The museum had kept me entertained for hours while I explored and looked at the exhibits for things that I have not previously seen. Since becoming a student at the University, I have not spent any time exploring the museum, so it was again a pleasant experience for me to invite my parents to reintroduce ourselves to Iowa Hall and the wonders of the Quaternary period. …show more content…

Even before man, many things happened in what is today the state of Iowa. It begins in the Precambrian and Cambrian period, which according to the website from UCMP Berkley, “The Cambrian Period marks an important point in the history of life on Earth; it is the time when most of the major groups of animals first appear in the fossil record. This event is sometimes called the "Cambrian Explosion," because of the relatively short time over which this diversity of forms appears.” The exhibit then goes on to explain all of the geologic periods, and how they contributed to the makeup of Iowa. I saw what had always seen there, but I saw it with new eyes. My knowledge of the history of Iowa and man has allowed me to see the exhibit with fresher eyes. Although I believe that Iowa Hall, as well as all of McBride’s displays could use updating, they serve the same informational and educational purpose which they are intended. The University of Iowa Natural History Museum is easily accessible, there is parking available close by. You could spend the day at all of the museums on the Pentacrest, and I have on many occasions. I believe it is one of the best attributes of the University, and it is one of the many reasons I came to the University for my education. I regret not coming to the museums more often while attending school here. After my visit here for this paper, I came back again to reevaluate my observations, and there was a birthday party at the museum, I felt as though I was seeing the museum for the first time again, running through, trying to see everything, and having the time of my life.
