Sports provide a nice source of money for the college but some of the money is given to the coaches where coaches are given much more money than professors that do make an effort to teach students. The money can be potentially be used to promote more departments and of the like, but to see that coaches get paid more than professors, it makes a statement of how sports are more important than education. Colleges are made to educate students and ensure that education are the highest quality valued, but to have professors who are the basis of education being paid less than coaches. Colleges are made to enhance student’s education and should not focus too much on its sports
Each March, there arises some kind of brouhaha across the country or at least within the four walls of colleges across the United States. The cause is the highly regarded single-elimination tournament officially known as the NCAA Men’s Division 1 Championship, and colloquially as the March Madness. As described by Chris Suellentrop on the 6th Floor Blogs of the “New York Times” magazine, this “is the greatest sporting event of the year, and in particular, the tournament’s first weekend serves up the most entertaining four days in sports.” (Suellentrop 2011)
The overall culture and importance that American society places on college sports is susceptible to debate and criticism. Are we spending too much time and money on college football? The article, “The shame of the NCAA” by Dave Zirin and the essay written by Tim Ajmani, “Compensation for college students?”, have many similarities. Dave Zirin states, “The coaches own the athletes’ feet, the colleges own the athletes’ bodies, and the supervisors retain the large reward (Zirin 205)”, and in the piece written by Tim Ajmani, “they reap the benefits of the athletes competing in their sports(Ajmani 209)”. They both get at the same point but in different ways, student athletes are being owned by these colleges and the NCAA is getting paid for the hard work and skills that are shown on the court. Both writers suggested that students should get paid so they could finish school and not be a one and done.

I believe that college sports should be considered a profession. Athletes deserve to be paid for their work. College athletics are a critical part of America’s culture and economy. At the present time, student-athletes are considered amateurs. College is a stepping-stone to the professional leagues. The NCAA is exploiting the student- athlete. Another significant reason to pay college athletes is that education is not the NCAA’s priority. This brings to surface one of the most asked questions in sports, “What effect does college sports have on academics and economics?” Herbert D. Simons, Derek Van Rheenen, and Martin V. Covington, authors of “Academic Motivation and the Student Athlete” researched the topic on whether athletics and academics benefit each other. Bryan Flynn, the author of “College Sports vs. Academics” poses the question “Should institutions of higher learning continue to involve themselves in athletic programs that often turn out to be virtual arms races for recruiting talented players who bring big money and prestige, but put academics to the back burner?” Although both authors agree that sports have an impact on an athlete’s academics, the focus of their argument differs.
