In healthcare, having effective communication skills is pivotal to healthcare. With the involvement of multidisciplinary teams it organizes the patient's health by allowing everyone to have one shared goal, clear roles, and trust among team members to assure that the patient gets the best possible health care that they can possibly get from the healthcare facility.
A multidisciplinary team is a group of healthcare professionals who are specialized in different fields and each have their own part in providing assistance to a patient. The specific members of the team all have their own fields of expertise that they contribute to the team and patient's health. The team takes care of the patient's medical and physical needs, along with providing emotional support to their patients.
Although multidisciplinary teams are very beneficial to the patient, it requires a lot of work to make sure everything run smoothly. Professionals who are assigned a task pertaining to the patient must be able to complete the work the team is depending on them to finish in a limited time period. A team that does not communicate with each other does work individually, resulting to the lack of a shared goal. Without a shared goal each person would be doing something differently, with some professionals doing something that has nothing to do with the main issue or requirement to meet the needs of the patient. Cultivating teamwork is vital in the fast-moving pace of the Emergency Department. One of the most important ways to cultivate this process is through developing a plan of communication with the team. According to L.J. Hood, communication is “…the dynamic interaction between two or more persons in which ideas, goals, beliefs and values, feelings, and feelings about feelings are exchanged. Even very brief communication exchanges may change all involved parties” (Hood, 2014, P.81). In many scenarios some nurses and staff members are unwilling to be those team players that are needed in a busy nursing unit, and many times nurses and staff will not communicate professionally at all. In these situations, some nurses and staff will require coaching sessions on how to communicate, and in worst case scenarios some nurses and staff, who are unwilling to communicate professionally, will be asked to leave the team
Care coordination within health care systems ensures the client of an effective and short stay. Care coordination refers to the coordination between and among professional teams that serve valuable roles involved in providing care to clients. Different disciplines of health care professionals include nursing, medicine, case management, pharmacy, nutrition, social work, and allied health professionals, such as speech therapists and physical therapists. They are found in all health care delivery systems and are extremely effective when the focus is strictly on the needs of the client. Interprofessional teams are valuable because each health care professional has specialized knowledge and skills so that health care plans are determined with patients’ best interests in mind. With the communication of ideas amongst the disciplines, their roles consequently complement one another in an age of exponentially growing information. This team process of care coordination can improve quality of care, enhance client satisfaction, and reduce hospital cost by decreasing length of stay; care coordination ensures the best possible outcomes (Koch, 2014, p. 436).
For this reason, it is imperative that individuals improve communication among these stakeholders. In the course of 4days in a hospital, a patient can come into contact with about 50 different employees including nurses, technicians and physicians. As a result, for effective clinical practice, critical information MUST be passed on with complete accuracy. Communication and collaboration are an integral part of interprofessional health care teams. There could be possible barriers to communication and collaboration that could affect the entire team’s success. Personal values and expectation, personality differences, culture and ethnicity, and gender could affect how some individuals respond according to a patient’s care or needs(O’Daniel, 2008). Communication involves relaying information from an individual to another through the use of verbal and nonverbal techniques. Many factors affect the effectiveness of information relay. It involves evaluating verbal aspects such as tone of voice, the emotional content being communicated, the timing and rapport of the interaction with patients, and nonverbal techniques such as facial expressions, time invested. It is necessary for productive and satisfactory work environment, improved patient outcomes, and settling conflicts. The purpose of this paper is to identify issues with ineffective communication and ways to improve proper communication throughout the a hospital’s interdisciplinary team and patients.
