William Shakespeare 's play, Much Ado About Nothing is a love story about two young couples, their friends, and families. The story takes place in the town of Messina. Leonato is the governor and owns a beautiful estate. His daughter, Hero, his niece, Beatrice, his brother Antonio, and many others live together on the estate. When the play begins, The Prince of Aragon, Claudio, Benedick, Don Jon, and other soldiers are just arriving in Messina on their way back from a war. Claudio immediately falls in love upon the sight of the beautiful Hero. The other couple, Benedick and Beatrice, are quickly swept up in witty banter and a need of superiority over the other. Out of jealousy, Don Jon sets up a trap demonstrating Hero 's unreal infidelity the night before the wedding. After Claudio finds out his bride to be is being unfaithful he publicly shames her at the wedding. Hero is humiliated and Claudio did witness with his own eyes who he thought was Hero being unfaithful, but he never gave her an opportunity to share her side of the story. After the wedding is destroyed, Hero fakes her own death and eventually the truth comes out. When Claudio learns of Hero 's death and the scheme, he feels terrible. Their lack of knowledge regarding the other 's character nearly jeopardizes their entire relationship. In Much Ado About Nothing, both couples are put though events that test their love. Claudio and Hero fall in love quickly leading their relationship to fall apart even quicker than it started. Beatrice and Benedick must learn to be honest with themselves and throw out their pride in order to have a happy marriage.
