Benchwarmers Humans are funny creatures. We judge and classify others and ourselves into groups. We tear apart others esteem to feel stronger. And we put limits on ourselves, whether they are thought up by our imagination or other’s. The truth is, we aren’t perfect, but we can become better, that is, if we choose to. Benchwarmers captures that thought perfectly. Though it is a comedy, and a very hilarious one at that, it provides some very true points to consider. Benchwarmers is a great movie to watch because within this side-splittingly funny movie, there are important messages such as: bullying is a double edged sword, stereotypes can be overcome, and that diversity is what makes life exciting. When generally thinking of these two groups, it is typical to imagine a nerd in front of a computer inside and a jock playing around outside. Jerry’s kid takes it a step farther when he kicks out Mel’s kid and his friends when they are playing in their neighborhood baseball diamond. Nerds in this show are constantly stereotyped in this movie, which makes the Benchwarmers all the better of heroes since they don’t adhere to those stereotypes and play baseball anyways. In the final game, it’s the Benchwarmers verses the original bully team. However, even though they could win, they allow all the nerdy kids to come down and play baseball, some of them for their first times, and throw off the confines society had placed on their heads. When the bully team sees how much fun these kids are having, even though they are losing immensely, they are inspired. Jocks and nerds display some of the most diversity in Benchwarmers. But when you look analyze all the outcomes, their differences actually helped the protagonist succeed in life. Mel was bullied when he was younger, which inspires him to do well and make a lot of money. Jerry and his kid motivate Richie and Clark to become good at baseball. The niceness of the nerds soften the bullies in the final game, allowing the nerds to win. This show shows over and over again how diversity helps us become better, even if it doesn’t seem that way at
