Case Study: Fetal Abnormality and Moral Status
Modern science and advanced technology make possible finding the abnormality of an unborn child while in the mother 's womb. In the given case, Jessica and Marco, a young couple recently moved to their own apartment, found out that Jessica is pregnant with fetus abnormality. Once abnormalities detected, it becomes heartbreaking and hard to choose what to do either continue the pregnancy or terminate. There are several theories on moral status of the fetus, which can be applied in the decision making process when abnormalities detected are discussed here along with involved individual value, believe, and interest. The writer also presents the reality of the situation and recommend the best solution.
Therefore Marco may choose termination of pregnancy based on these three described theories and may discuss with Jessica but he appears to be respecting the Jessica’s final voice. The Dr. Wilson position of the fetus also shows lack of moral agency, sentience and consciousness theory as evidenced by giving his advice and decision for abortion based on current facts and scientific evidence, genetic abnormality and quality of life. Maria is against the abortion in any circumstances. Her moral status is based on relationship theory and she view the fetus moral status is based on how Jessica views herself as a mother child relationship. The relationship theory states that no one should interfere with one another and has obliged to respect their right as they have relationship with one another like mother-child and family relationship. (GCU, 2015). The fetus deserves the right to live and grow. Jessica needs to honor the fetus’ moral right and value, thus keep continue the pregnancy and give birth to child as God
The writer agrees with relationship theory and believes that everyone is valuable and has the right to live and decide within the relationship. In the given case scenario, the fetus has already formed and become a part of social life. Jessica already bonded with fetus and hesitating to abortion, Marco agrees with Jessica’s decision and Maria is emphasizing on mother, baby relationship which also reflect the moral status of the fetus.
