The question that has been asked for so long is, "Are the mind and brain two different things?" This can be answered with the following concept that is known as dualism. Dualism is a theory that states that the universe, all of reality, is made up of two substances. The two substances are the physical substance and the mind. The physical substance is matter, the body or in general anything that takes up space. As for the mind, it is something immaterial, it is not physical or takes up any space. Philosophers argue that the mind and body are two different things that are capable of affecting one another. Monism states that the universe is composed of only one type of substance and monists argue that it can either be the mind or the body that exists, not both. Two ideas that compose monism are physicalism, which holds that all things are composed out of physical matter and idealism that argues how all the things are composed out of mind, not your mind, but God. Philosophers believe that everything is physical and that it can be clarified by all the sciences since they are the branches of physics. Physicalism argues that everything supervenes on the physical and that every existing thing depends on the physical. Idealism states that the mind is all that exists and that the outside world is either mental or an illusion that the mind creates. Idealism also says that all things are ideas. Idealism argues that the physical is a function of the mind therefore saying that the mind is the only one that exists. Monists argue that mental events are physical events and the mind is what has the most control. Monists still cannot come to a conclusion whether the body is the one that exists or the mind is the one that exists. Monism also comes in contact with the concept of supervenience
When addressing the mind and body issue, there are often multiple explanations. Out of those multiple explanations, Dualism and Materialism are the ones to stick out. Dualism stands on the ground that the mind and body are two fundamentally different things. There is in no way that you can make a distinction between the two. For no one can explain how a non-physical entity can affect a physical body. On the other hand Materialism (aka physicalism) stands the ground that there is only one entity in the world, which has to be physical. That everything in the universe has meaning in physical terms, for the brain is the mind.
The first type Metaphysical materialism is a type of monism that claims that reality is totally physical. The second type idealism is a type of monism that claims that reality is entirely mental or religious. On page 56 I read that both argue a dualism that posits both mind and matter as equally really will never be able to explain how these two very different types of reality could ever fit together into one unified universe. They cannot work together.
Richard Taylor explained why the body and the mind are one, and why they are not two separate substances. In the article “The Mind as a Function of the Body”, Taylor divides his article in a number of sections and explains clearly why dualism, or the theory that the mind and the body are separate is not conceivable. In one of these sections it is explained in detail the origin of why some philosophers and people believe in dualist metaphysics. As stated by Taylor “when we form an idea of a body or a physical object, what is most likely to come to mind is not some person or animal but something much simpler, such as a stone or a marble”(133). In a world with full of distinct materials and sprits formed by billions of live human beings, animals and plants, many people come up with distinct ideas towards existence of elements from a live form. The three theories are mainly recognised – Monism, Dualism and Functionalism are considered as three main theories. However, since those have such distinct ideas, numerous claims and arguments for prove were raised in last couple of millennia. Monism, Dualism and Functionalism have its own special traits, there is a certain idea I mostly prefer – which is Dualism due to a concrete personal belief on perception.
Rene Descartes certainly didn't lack for credentials. As the "Father of Rationalism," "Father of Modern Philosophy," and originator of Cartesian geometry, he had more than enough interests to fill his spare time. But his role as "Father of Skepticism" helped popularize a major change in thinking about the nature of human experience. Dualism, or the doctrine that mind and body are of two distinct natures, is one of the key philosophical problems inherited by psychology. In both philosophy and psychology there have been several attempts to reconcile the mind and body.

Mind-body dualism is usually seen as the central issue in philosophy of the mind. The problem with mind-body dualism is that it is unknown whether the mind really is a separate entity from the human body as Descartes states in his argument, or whether the mind is the brain itself. Descartes believed that in a person existed two major components, the physical body and the nonphysical body which was called the mind or soul. As a scientist, Descartes believed in mechanical theories of matter, however, he was also very religious and did not believe people could merely be mechanical creatures that ran like “clockwork.” And so, it was Descartes who argued that the mind directed thoughts. To account for this, he split the world into two parts, the scientific world and the mental world. The scientific world was all that was physical, like the human body. The mental world was the mind which could not be seen or touched. Thus, mind-body dualism was created. If the mind could not be seen or touched, how could it possibly interact with the human body and so, how do we know if it even exists? Also, how would we know if other minds exist if we cannot make contact with other minds? Questions like these are what made Descartes’ version of dualism improbable and led to different theories of the mind such as physicalism, which is the belief that the mind is just a result of brain states such as nerve impulses in certain areas of the brain.
The debate as to the true nature of human beings, the existence of free will and the validity of science is centered on two philosophical theories; dualism and materialism. Physicalism is the theory that the universe contains nothing other than the physical. Therefore, the universe can be fully explained in physical terms. In terms of the mind, mental states globally supervene on physical states, meaning that there are no changes in the mental without changes in the physical. Identity theory is a type of physicalism, which posits that brain states are identical to mental states. They may not have exactly the same meanings, but the refer to the same thing. This is opposed to Dualism, which contends that mental states are non-physical and therefore different than brain states.

Philosophical way on humanity, for centuries philosophers have debated on a topic called Monism. Monists hold the principle that being is purely based upon one critic “category of being” this means that either the person is made up of only the body or only the mind (Morris). Because Animists, Hindus, and Buddhists believe that reality is one and that everything that exists is a functioning part of that whole which is spirit are for the most part monists. Western people for the most part may be called a monist also as they believe that God is dead and matter is the only substance to reality. As a consequence, monism is the claim that mind and matter essentially the same. The concept of transcendental reality (spiritual) in terms of Vedanta is the essential philosophy original to the Hindus. The major ideas of Vedanta are, first, the ultimate existence. A strong hold that all the things we see around us are ultimately reducible to one substance/one existence. But we claim it to be the essential philosophy of all religions, which makes it Non-Western Religious more than Non-Western Philosophy.

According to Descartes, the body is a tangible physical substance (the unthinking thing), whereas the mind is an intangible non-physical substance (the thinking thing) and comes metaphysically before the body (3). The mind and body casually interact with one another while maintaining their distinctiveness: the eyes perceive objects and then focus the image to the pineal gland, where it transmits the information to the non-physical mind; the mind then may transmit a signal to the body, telling it what to do. The mind and body are independent from one another, yet they work in harmony; the mind receives signals from the body and the body responds to signals from the mind.
