The 7 cities we know are Merv (Turkmenistan), Nishapur (Iran), Urgench (Uzbekistan), Herat and Balkh (Afghanistan). When the Mongols plundered these cities they massacred a lot of people. They massacred 1.6 million innocent people in Herat, 1.7 million people in Nishapur, and the massacred 800,000 at Baghdad. The violence of these people was outrageous! The madness made it come to the destruction of the beautiful city of Merv. When the Mongols came upon Merv they demanded the most fairest/ beautiful women in the city. Despite the fact that Mongolians were prejudiced against other cultures, they were, in fact, not barbaric but rather civilized because of their gender equality of people and how advanced their cities were. In The Book of Ser Marco Polo, Polo tells us how beautiful and well protected the city was like. For instance, the text explains how the city was protected by two great powerful walls surrounding the entire city. Only well advanced and civilized people can do such a thing such as creating an enormous wall. If the Mongolians were barbaric they wouldn’t have even thought of protection.. The Mongols have influenced many of the concept and idea that we still see utilized today in politics and international relations. Jack Weatherford tremendously changed my insight into the true Mongol and not the barbaric, savage I once thought of just by hearing the word. I resent this research paper a great deal, and I know that I may not get the grade I want, but at least I did learn something new and destroyed the previous thought I had about these people just by completing it so I feel it served its purpose and that’s the only reason my mind was changed.

Though the Mongols were brutal in their campaign to conquer, the conquests of Timur-i Lang were extremely harsh, much more so than that of the Mongols. He is heralded as one of the toughest rulers of the time, and he expanded the empire through harsh measures. Rather than the Mongols, who post-conquest were somewhat peaceful, Timur-i Lang was harmful to those he conquered in Asia. He slaughtered villages and burned them down. Most likely because of his rule and the vastness of the area he ruled, the Mongol empire was not united and failed to garner any big trading network that it previously had. Overall, Timur-i Lang was much more brutal than the rule of any other Mongol Khan, especially during the conquests and after the conquests. His zeal to get more land prevented any conquered peoples to live peacefully under his leadership.

The Mongols conquered lands such as China, leaving such a lasting influence on them that their legacy still lives on. However, despite the Mongols success, their actions have left a constantly ongoing debate on whether they were barbarians, seen and portrayed by different societies of their time as people with no morale or modern civilities, or civilized people who were just feared by other societies. Although the Mongols are generally now seen as Barbarians because of their violent and barbaric war tactics they used to instill fear in people, they are actually civilized because they had a strategically organized army, and because they were accepting of the customs of other peoples.
