Does buying material things for myself or others make us happier? Can that Happiness last or will it fade with the next goal that arrives? Many people have different ideas of what happiness is and is not, but a person’s personal experience in life is a cause. Personally, happiness is achieving goals, making money, the way I spend that money, and spending time with my family and friends.

I have found that in my life if I set goals and I consistently meet said goals in that event I’ve found myself happier. On the assumption that my goal is to get an A grade in my English class and I meet that goal I will be happier for a time, but that happiness doesn’t last; because there will be a new goal after that one to finish. It’s a means and an end” (Rubin 291). Some people might interpret that I get my happiness from making money alone, but that wouldn’t be true. My happiness comes from making the people in my life happier and doing what I can for them, so as Gretchen Rubin states, “’Money can buy happiness?’ The answer: no. That was clear. Money alone can’t buy happiness” (293). In my opinion, she is correct and money alone cannot buy happiness, but making money leads to stability which lowers stress in my life thus making me happier. “’Can money help buy happiness?’ The answer: yes, used wisely, it can” (Rubin 293). The way I spend my money can bring happiness, and if I acquired an excess amount of belongings with a complete disregard for the people in my life, as a result I wouldn’t be happier. One part of finding happiness is finding what I want, and happiness cannot rely solely on buying material things in excess. Graham Hill said, “there isn’t any sign that any of theses things make anyone happier: in fact, it seems that the reverse is true” (308). I have noticed this is true; because I’ve had many material possessions and had to live without many - I can now find a happy medium in my present life.
