This paper aims at providing more information concerning the different modes of transport, their characteristics and also the comparison of these modes with one another in an effort to establish the best mode of transport for specific commodities. The paper also takes into consideration the various factors affecting the transport sector; such as cost of transportation, flexibility, time factor and reliability. Transport refers to the process that enables physical movement of goods and people from on area to another. It is relatively cheap compared to other modes of transport in terms of acquiring the trucks and also maintaining them and the roads. It is the best mode of transporting perishable goods like fruits and vegetables over a short distance. The limitations with this mode of transport are that it is not economical for long distances due to its limited carrying capacity. It also has high cost especially when transporting heavy and bulky goods. It is also highly affected by adverse weather conditions such as floods, landslides among others. Water transport is not flexible because it is restrained within water bodies. The use of containers has becomes the best inter-modal option for water transport whereby goods are placed in containers and transported through truck or rail to the port where it is loaded in to a container ship. Upon arrival to the destination port it is offloaded and transported again by track or rail to the consumer of customes.This helps reduce staffing needs, transit time and damages (Haulk, 1998).
