Sports Dominate the modern world. One of the biggest sporting events in the Olympics. A lot of aspects went into shaping the modern Olympics. The modern Olympics were shaped from the outlook of competitors, the reflection of the countries, and the economics of participating countries. The competitors were perhaps the most important and influential aspect of modern Olympics. As depicted by Document 2, women could compete in the early Olympics but very few did. However as gender equality grew more and more women’s enthusiasm for participating increased. Hassiba Boulmerka reflected on, in Document 8, how her victories inspire more Algerian female athletes to succeed, even when society did not always encourage them. For the hosting country the games brought viewers from around the world. Document 6 imposed that, hosting the games was a sign of prestige. Although source 6 was biased in promoting Soviet values and view, he did exemplify the national pride that hosting the Olympics brought. This respect motivated many countries to join the games. Document 1 shows how Europeans wanted to bring the Olympics to Europe in order to facilitate peace and improve international standings. An interesting document that would provide some perspective would be a speech of a person who opposed bringing the Olympics to Europe, or any country. Even sponsoring, not necessarily hosting, the Olympics brought high profits and these high profits instituted a hot bid for these rights as shown by Document 7. The increased competition for sponsoring drove the Olympics to success and higher prestige. Overall the games reflected only the best in countries, and this standard reflected on the country's national pride. There are many “first frontiers” for women. There has been the first female doctor, mathematician, astronaut, scientist, and nobel prize winner. The first female novelist, CEO, Senator, Supreme Court Justice, and PhD. Each of these women have changed the way females are perceived around the world, and have paved the way for women in each of their fields. In her essay “One of the Girls” Leslie Heywood explores the idea that the first female athletes are just as important as these other “first” women.
From 1892 to 2002 women had proven to be very powerful whether it be something as little as gaining the rights to a divorce or something as big as the rights to vote and the same opportunities in vocation, women have shown that they are willing to do whatever it takes to gain equal rights and have prospered as a result (Doc #2, #8). An anonymous photographer (Doc #2) captures an image of one of the 2% of women athletes in the 1908 Olympic games held in Great Britain, Sybil Newall. The photographer shows that a factor that stopped the Olympics was the allowance of new rights for women and new opportunities for them to rise socially and participate in the modern Olympic games. The photographer shows this because during this time period in Western Europe women gained the ability to represent their country or nation at a new level, similar to what happened with woman’s suffrage. The Olympics are supposed to be a time of peace and a time where countries could come together and be free from politics. The Olympics are also a time where nations should put away their differences and celebrate the reason why they came to participate in the games, which was to play sports. Throughout history, many of the Olympics have lived up to this expectation. At the same time, there have also been some Olympics that have not lived up to this expectation because they have been experienced boycotts, political protests, and even violence. The politics in the Olympics need to be kept out because it there is no place for it. The 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow is an example of one Olympics that was not free from politics because of the boycott started by the U.S.
Modern Day Olympics are a huge tradition that sweeps the screens of televisions across the world. Competitors take the arena with uniforms that dawn their countries colors and designs that are meant to resemble their designated flag. For months the news is centered around the games; the preparation, the athletes, and of course the competition. Countries aren 't obsessed, they are inspired and full of pride seeing athletes from their country compete and show their incredible skill. Finish, Finish, Go, and Go you just set the new world record. Every four years lots of people gather around a pool cheering for Olympians. It is a very noisy place. A lot of Olympians that are part of the summer Olympics are very athletic, they swim all year around. The swimming Olympic history and background is very interesting. They have done so many new things over that past couple of years. They come out with new rules every year to make things more fair and challenging. There are a lot of events and tons of records that have been broke. A lot of Olympians have set future goals to stride for. I was swimming the 200 meter fly I was at a really good time when I had 50 meter sprint left at the end all I could think about was I’m going to set the new world record. Olympic swimming is a very fun sport it is very athletic. Every year in the summer time every one always sits around a TV watching this it is very famous in America. Swimmers from all around the world come and here and compete. There is a lot of competition there I have found out a lot about the history of swimming. As we all know, Beijing, China is the host for Summer Olympics 2008, were a major international multi-sport event from August 8 to August 24, 2008. Even though Olympic Beijing is all dress up, but no one is going because the organizer was struggling to handle an unexpected inside Summer Games venues. The Olympics officials feel disappointed because so many empty seats at nearly every event and the lack of pedestrian traffic throughout the park. To overcome the problems the officials are busing in teams of state-trained cheer squads to help fill the empty seats and improve the atmosphere and encourage residents to apply for access to the heavily secured park.

We are able to see that hosting the Olympics plays an important role in the development of a country. Despite having a number of valid reasons to oppose the hosting of Olympics, we are able to reap more long-term benefits. Rebranding the country to make it outstanding enough to attract tourist and boost tourism head on. For this reason, it brings in more income for the country and creates more job opportunities in the tourism sector. This would indirectly create job chances in industrial sector. Unemployment rate goes down significantly which are able to attract more people towards the country. Citizens will be more patriotic and not wanting to leave the country. Sports are often seen as simple consequence of the industrial revolution. The Impact of increased urbanization, better communication and transportation, as well as more time and income for specialization, all led to the creation of sports. (szymanski). In essence As the public sphere grew so did the concept of sport. (Szymanski). Most believe that since athletes are paid outrageous amounts of money they are considered to be role models to younger generations.
