After reading the classic and modern Hippocratic Oath, it is my contention that the modern vision is still applicable today. First of all, I appreciate the humility of the oath because this oath reminds physicians that they are caring for people not just illness: “I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick human being, whose illness may affect the person's family and economic stability” (Tyson, 2001). Sometimes, patients get lost in the shuffle of medicine; they are much more than an illness and need to be treated as such. Patient centeredness is reflected in this oath. Hippocrates was a very influential person, and his studies are still prevalent today. He was a great physician who had an influence on the development of medicine and on the ethics of being a physician. This allowed for medicine to be more prevalent in the world. Hippocrates was known as the “father of medicine” and was the idealistic physician because he was wise, caring, compassionate, and honest. Under Hippocratic medicine, a well-trained physician could cure illness with knowledge gained from medical writings or from experience, and modern medicine is still based on this assumption. Though Hippocrates died in 337 BCE, his exemplary life has been a constant source of inspiration for physicians throughout history.

Rebecca Skloot’s novel, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, depicts the violation of medical ethics from the patient and researcher perspectives specifically when race, poverty, and lack of medical education are factors. The novel takes place in the southern United States in 1951. Henrietta Lacks is born in a poor rural town, Clover, but eventually moves to urban Turner Station. She was diagnosed and treated for cervical cancer at Johns Hopkins hospital where cells was unknowingly taken from her and used for scientific research. Rebecca Skloot describes this when she writes, “But first—though no one had told Henrietta that TeLinde was collecting sample or asked she wanted to be a donor—Wharton picked up a sharp knife and shaved two dime-sized pieces of tissue from Henrietta's cervix: one from her tumor, and one from the healthy cervical tissue nearby. Hippocratic medicine remains one of Ancient Greece's lasting contributions to the field of science. Lacking the equipment physicians today take for granted when diagnosing and healing their patients, Hippocratic physicians were forced to create a novel system for explaining and curing disease based upon the prevalent scientific theories of their era. This system became known as the humoral theory of disease. Humoral theory incorporated the theories of Presocratic philosophers in order to explain disease and offer help for a cure. Two themes characterizing Presocratic philosophical thought dramatically influenced humoral theory. The humoral theory approach of Hippocratic medicine was based upon Presocratic philosophical musings about the relationship of man to the world. By the time humoral theory was vogue, philosophers had concluded that both man and the world were governed by the same natural laws. Humoral theory also was based upon Presocratic theories about change and how it occurred in the world; humoral theory depended upon the assertion that contrasting elements constantly contradicted each other, leading to continuous change on one level and stability on another. These two Presocratic theories shaped humoral theory and allowed the physician to develop a rational and empirically based approach to medicine.
The Hippocratic Oath is a moral code for ethical conduct and practice in medicine. In life there would be times where a family member or yourself may become ill. It 's important to provide support and the proper care because it helps the healing processing of a patient; especially a child. A child needs the most care and support because children are innocent and most times do not understand what goes on around them. The Hippocratic oath has principles that have been upheld by healthcare providers for ages, regardless of the values presented within. There are a plethora of ideals suggested throughout the oath that could definitely be questioned with careful examination. In this essay, I will argue that the Hippocratic oath should be removed as a central medical ethic until it is updated to meet the contemporary medical requirements, because the majority of the values which are instilled within, display antiquity that could be easily reversed with a modern revision.
The classical Hippocratic Oath burdens unnecessarily on the new physician who is responsible to provide financial support to his teacher as well as teach this healing art to the relatives of the teacher, if they are willing to learn. Another curios thing which stood out to me was, whenever physician visits any home, he should not seduce family members of the patients for sexual relation. There are few points from the classical Hippocratic Oath, which physician will expect to be the content of the oath while taking oath at medical school. The first one is to provide good advice on the diet and keeping the patients from harm and injustice. The second point is on the prohibition of the abortion as well as keeps the patient’s information confidential.
Doctors are the humanitarians in our society. Doctors are looked to bridge the gap between science and humankind. We look to doctors as important change agents to explain scientific understanding. The Hippocratic Oath is a required pledge taken by doctors to uphold specific ethical standards. The Hippocratic Oath: Modern Version states, “I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures which are required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism” (Lasagna, 1964). Patients feel at ease knowing that their care providers are being held to a high moral and ethical standard. Taking a formal oath in public carries a symbolic importance for mutually the individual doctor and the greater public (Catto & Graeme, 2014).
