Many modern day fashion designers have often looked back on the history of fashion, design, and styles that have had significant impact on society. The need for new ideas and inspirations has led to many designers to borrow and even reinvent ideas from those of the past. Many historic garments and works provide an invaluable resource for designers, examples can be found from eras such as the French golden age to the austerity of fashion during the great depression and war periods, where fashion experimentation was sometimes limited. This knowledge of history combined with designers creative ability can make for a successful contemporary collection, which is suited for the modern day. For his spring summer 2002 collection, garments were inspired by the works of Sixties and Seventies photographer Sudeko Bobson Mohanlall. His collection consisted of a kaleidoscope of patterns and a vibrant colour combination with a clown-like resemblance, made from harlequin prints. Suits were in the style similar to the 1940s zoot suit which was popular at this time in the US amongst African Americans. Pin stripe trousers were show along with gypsy style skirts which made his collection more playful. However in comparison John Galliano made a breakthrough at Dior’s spring 2007 haute- couture collection by creating a collection that was more wearable, pretty with lace and silk. The key piece of the collection was a fitted jacket, which resembled a jacket from Dior’s own 1947 "bar suit". Galliano also made reference to the peace and love generation of the late 1960s and early 1970s, by quoting "Dior Not War" and "Dior for Peace" on his garments whilst playing John Lennon 's Imagine in the
