Modern family is a TV show that aired in 2009, and it portrays the daily life of three different families who are all related. This TV show tries to capture the conception of what it means to be a family nowadays. One of the main characters of this sitcom is Claire and Phil Dunphy, a typical couple. Claire and Phil are married and have three children Alex, Haley, and Luke. Haley is the oldest child, a dramatic teenager who only cares about cloths, boys, and driving. She is not intelligent, and she can barely pass her classes. Haley’s beauty attracts all the boys, and she always gets what she wants from them. Her parents do not expect great things from her. They believe Haley will marry a smart man in the future that will think for her. On the other hand, Alex is the opposite of Haley. Alex is a nerd and has a brilliant mind. She is smarter than her parents are, and she gets often the highest grade among her classmates. Alex studies all the time, she is not as pretty as her sister Haley is, and boys are not attracted to Alex as they are to Haley. Another member of the family is Luke, the youngest child. Luke gets in trouble all the time. He is always doing the most naïve and stupid without thinking about the consequences. Ironically, Luke’s dad, Phil, is the one that helps him. Phil is a real estate husband who acts like a ten years old boy. He tries to be a cool dad, but he embarrasses his children all the time. On the contrary, Claire is a stay- home mother with common sense. She does all the work in the house yet; her family does not appreciate her work. Claire is the responsible adult in the family, and the person that have to ground the children when they get in trouble. Sometimes, she has to treat Phil like a kid because of h... ... middle of paper ... ...close relationship with his mother. When he first met Jay, Manny did not like him. In addition, Manny likes to write poetry, and he is very honest. Overall, Modern Family tries to capture the meaning of family in the present- day. The show has different families that are traditional and nontraditional. In addition, there are some stereotypes in the sitcom such as women’s role in the society. For instance, the women in the show do not work, and they stay home making sure that their husbands and children are taking cared. Even the gay man that acts more feminine is the one that stays home doing domestic work. Moreover, fathers in modern family make fool of themselves acting like children, and it is always the wives that have to save the day. The TV show also implies that beautiful women do not need a brain to think, and that unattractive women have to be smart.
