Rape is a type of sexual assault that results from sexual intercourse occurring without a person’s consent. The victim can range from any age and can be either gender. The issues revolving rape are controversial as some blame the victim. Some people believe that the victim deserves to be blamed when situations could have been avoided had they done something different. However, these actions that are said to promote rape are promoted by media and the psychological effects rape has on a person are being overlooked when considering how to place blame in rape cases.
Misconceptions regarding rape myths can impact how people view the victim and how blame is assigned in rape cases. These misconceptions, found by a specialist on violence against women, “are often called ‘rape myths,’ because they are powerful stereotypes that can have a profound impact on perceptions of rape and the treatment of victims/survivors and offenders both within and …show more content…

A Princeton graduate discussed how young adults “need to know that putting themselves in compromising situations and expecting nothing bad to occur is naïve at best” (Fortgang). Rape myths often include young adults promoting rape through inappropriate clothing.Young adults make up the majority of rape cases due to their high intake of alcohol and young girls wearing more inappropriate clothing than older women. This is why people are expected to act a specific way in order to prevent rape; however, this should not be the case. Although these situations occur, it does not mean that this should place blame on the victim for putting themselves in these situations. Nobody should have to feel that if they go to the wrong place in the wrong outfit that they have the potential of being raped because they were asking for it.
