Microaggression and it affects non marginalized groups of people in society.
The word microaggression is a term used to describe the insults, brush offs, and slights directed at a person or particular group of people either because of their sex, age, race, gender, and/or their sexuality, particularly those marginalized by society.
There are three types of microaggressions. First, there are the deliberate actions known as microassaults, which are very similar to old fashioned racism. The second type is the microinsult. For example, a non heteronormative couple comes into a restaurant but are put in a section that is considered undesirable while the straight couple that come in after then are sat in the nicer section of the restaurant. In the movie Precious the scene where she is catcalled by a group of men on the street. This is a gender microaggression because it fulfills a theme of what we know as sexual objectification. Even when you think it’s a compliment, it can still be offensive.
Precious also covers microaggression towards class, race, and gender differences. Abuse, poverty and betrayal are such common themes in this heart wrenching film. The story centers around a young African-American girl who is pregnant with her father’s son and is HIV positive. Her mother frequently abuses her physically and verbally. Telling Precious that no one will ever want her and that she needs to get on welfare. The movie shows casts light on how people in poverty are treated, especially women of color.
In a paper called, “Learning Poverty Firsthand” Jason DeParle questions how people are expected to survive when they are in poverty, stating that the poor simply can’t survive on welfare alone. DeParle talks about how there is a certain about of privilege that is required for a person to be able to do well in school and to hold a job. Privilege that Precious does not
