The Pieta is a Renaissance work of art a sculpture by Michelangelo Buonarroti. It is housed in Saint Peters Basilica, at Vatican City. It is the first of a number of same theme artworks by Michelangelo housed there.
In Christian Art Pieta Depicts Virgin Mary cradling Jesus dead body as depicted after in sculptures. The Pieta in Italian means the pity in English. Depict some versions with John the apostle, Mary Magdalene, the Pieta sculptures elegance has inspired emotion, imitation, and faith yet few are aware of its centuries old secrets being uncovered or revealed.

Within the triangular shapes, Michelangelo uses other shapes for unity and interest. Mary’s face is an oval and the position of Jesus Body makes a less severe obtuse triangle inverted inside the main triangle. The Pieta is constructed from a single piece of Carrara marble the same marble used for his “David”, the pantheon in Rome, and the marble arch in London. The mood of Pieta is somber, but the lines used give it energy and life. The folds of Mary’s clothing create energy and life. The folds of Mary’s clothing create lines in many directions. Most of these lines are diagonal in one direction or another. Jesus‘s body has many fewer distinct lines, emphasizing his lifelessness. A diagonal sash crosses Mary’s chest towards Jesus chest. This line subtly gives the viewer the message that they are absolutely connected. The direction of the lines in “the Pieta” is very intriguing. Traditionally, horizontal lines suggest stability, tranquility, and calmness, which would seem to be ideal qualities for the subject. Vertical lines suggest alertness, balance, and formality which would also be appropriate for the subject matter. The Pieta, includes very few vertical and horizontal lines.
