Franz Kafka, depicts the ideals and values of existentialism through the fictional novella The Metamorphosis. Joseph Campbell provides a succinct summary of existentialism with the following quote: “Life has no meaning. Each of us has meaning and we bring it to life. It is a waste to be asking the question when you are the answer” (Joseph Campbell). At the very beginning, Gregor has inexplicably transformed from his prior human form into the body of a cockroach. As the main character of this story, Gregor does not live up to existentialism morals because of how selfless he is. Gregor’s transformation into a cockroach is absurd in the sense that it is physically impossible, but, the way he lives his life in this form causes him severe depression because his life lacks any purpose. Despite the fact that he had become an enormous bug, his brain continued to function in the same manner as before his metamorphosis. This allows the readers to understand that his first priorities are work and not his own well-being. Gregor had learned to accept the selfless life he lives, which relates to the reason he was able to accept the supernatural form that he now possesses with no explanation.
