Many of us enjoy drinking an alcoholic beverage every now and then, either to unwind or to celebrate. Sometimes we consume too much alcohol that we ignore the negative effects it can have on our overall health. In this case study, two friends Kristin and Lisa decide to go out and celebrate Lisa’s 21st birthday. Even though Kristin agreed to take care of Lisa and to make sure she drinks responsibly. Throughout the night of Lisa’s birthday celebration, she makes some key decisions that end up affecting her towards the end of the night. We will address some of those poor decisions that Lisa made throughout the night and how those decisions negatively affects her health.
Drinking on an empty stomach causes alcohol to be absorbed into the body faster causing your blood alcohol content to spike leading to faster intoxication. According to nytimes.com there was a study conducted by Dr. Harris B. Startyner, in the study a group of people go out to drink two nights in total. Heavy drinkers are affected severely more than an occasional drinker. Alcohol related cognitive decline results in loss of motor skills, memory loss, emotional imbalance and anxiety. While drinking, the alcohol in your body effects the central nervous system like a depressant and slowing down nerve signals throughout your body. Having slow nerve signals effects your motor skills which include walking, driving, impaired reaction time and decision making. Higher amount of alcohol in your blood the lower your motor skills are. While intoxicated, you lose muscle control and could injure yourself, but you won’t feel it right away because of your slow nerve signals.
