The media is a huge culprit in promoting an unhealthy body type to women and men through uses of models, photoshopped, or edited images. The media showcases a body image which is deemed “perfect” through models that is harmful and unrealistic. Since the 1980’s, the American public has been plastered with media-driven depictions of what constitutes desirable female and male characteristics in our society (Ballaro and Wagner). The media constantly shows characteristics in models that are deemed desirable to the general public. The combination of two trends, the technology-enabled media saturation and the promotion by this media of highly unattainable body types, is largely responsible for an epidemic of body image pathologies affecting American …show more content…

Since these men and women do not see their current body type presented in the media, they may seek methods to copy what they see. While this is not entirely the media’s fault, the media does have a huge impact on how people view themselves. People who spend too much time on social media are at risk of developing eating disorders (Clark 2). Seeing other people sharing photos of their body will make those viewing it feel inadequate and self-conscious about their own body. They will do what is possible in order to obtain the body type they see promoted in the media. Men and boys are shown bodies that are slender and muscular. While this can be attainable, some may seek the help of drugs, such as steroids, and pills to help speed up the process. Women and girls are shown bodies that are dangerously thinned and bodies that show large breasts (Ballaro and Wagner). This cannot be attained without the help of plastic surgery and extreme dieting - both of which have more risk than benefits. Instead of promoting photoshopped and edited images as well as unhealthy models, the media and content posters should help people focus on healthy living and
