Media Logging Ethnography

Before I started this media logging exercise, I thought that I was on the lower on the scale of media consumption compared to my peers. I don’t watch television very often, and I’m not much of a newspaper reader. I get most of my information either from verbal communication or seeing something about it on Facebook, YouTube, or Snapchat, which are by far my most used forms of media. I’ve never been the kind of person who watches the news voluntarily, and I normally end up being the last to know about something happening in the mass media. Over the duration of the exercise, I began to realize that I use the internet over any other form of media. I used to think that some of my information came from actual news sources, but instead came to understand that almost all of the information that I acquire comes from the internet. Whether it was an ad on Facebook or a YouTube video criticizing some story that had been broadcasted to the mainstream, much of the information comes from the internet. Not having cable like most Americans is probably the reason I use the internet more than any other media outlet. I feel like I’m in the majority for my age group when it comes to print media though, as not many people in my age group read the newspaper daily like older …show more content…

The outlet I use the most is YouTube, accounting for 300 minutes over the course of the 3-day exercise. YouTube is owned by Google, one of the largest technology companies in the world. The outlet I use the least would be Twitter, which might surprise people in my age group. I’ve never been much of a person for Twitter, even though people my age seem to be on it hourly, while I might check it once or twice a week.
