Media Control: The Spectacular Achievements of Propaganda.
Synopsis of the book.
Chomsky examines and explores the use of propaganda in the mass media. His focus remains on the “elite” as he would call them, or the corporations and politicians that control the mass media in our country. He speaks of how the U.S. government used propaganda in order to gain support for our country’s involvement in wars from Wilson’s presidency to Bush Sr., and now in our so-called “War on Terror” brought upon by George W. Bush. He explains how he believes this elite group of people control the minds of those that are less educated, and without an open minds. He believes that propaganda has been used through the mass media to guide this population towards supporting political interests.
Why I chose this book.
I had heard from many of my friends about Noam Chomsky and how he may just be the most important intellectual alive today. So while I was helping my friend with an assignment of hers I came across this book at her house. I flipped through a couple of pages and decided to use this book for this project. I thought it would provide a new insight into the role of our government in the media.
How this book relates to this class.
This book discusses the governments role in the media. Although Chomsky’s views might be considered somewhat extreme by some standards, his message s important. We have discussed the government manipulation of the media. For example, President Roo...
Baseball developed before the Civil War but did not achieve professional status until the 1870s (The Baseball Glove, 2004). In 1871 the National Association of Professional Baseball Players was formed. Unfortunately the organization ran into financial hardships and was abandoned in 1875. The following year marked the formation of the National League of Professional Baseball Players, which was soon shortened to the National League (Ibid). In 1884 the rival American League was founded and th...
Brutus has a naive view of the world. He is unable to see through the roles being played by Cassius, Casca, and Antony. He does not even recognize the fake letters were sent from Cassius. Then Brutus says,“You shall not blame us Antony, in your funeral speech, but speak all the good you can of Caesar.
Soon forgives him because he doesn’t want to lose Simon and also since he cannot change the
The sport of baseball became a business, causing the sport to evolve into modern baseball. A.G. Spalding, president of the White Stockings “insisted the players be paid like entertainers; he created Spalding Sporting Goods, manufacturing balls, caps, uniforms, and gloves” (Smith, n.d., Baseball as a Business section). Spalding’s creation, gave each team a greater sense of unity; matching uniforms made the players a unit. A person enjoys being identified as part of a team, especially if the team happens to be successful. Unfortunately, the team owners did not pay for the player’s uniforms; the players were responsible for their own uniforms and their salaries were not adjusted for the additional
First, the role of the media is to represent the public and intervene between the public and the government. The media is a mirror, which re...
In society, more specifically American society, we picture dystopia as an apocalyptic scene, where a majority of the human race has succumbed to disease, physical violence, or oppression by the government that rules them. However, what we assume to be a figment of the imagination that fuels fiction is in fact reality. In many developing countries, civilians are victimized by the coercion of their national leaders. They are forced to adhere to laws or religious belief forced upon them by what can be more or less interpreted as dictatorship. As of 2017, the Syrian Refugee Crisis enters its sixth year following the inhumane killings of protesters in 2011, an act by the Syrian government led by President Bashar al-Assad to implement fear into the
The motivation and tendency of people to forgive others remains an important topic of discussion. In today’s society most people at some period have experienced feeling of un forgiveness towards friend, or relatives. “Forgiveness was defined as the ability to relinquish of resentment towards others” (Baskin & Enright, 2004, p. 80).
There is usually a feeling of change and attitude that regards positive alternatives towards an offender. In this situation acts like vengefulness is overlooked. In short, contrary or deconstructive emotions are not included in the predicament. Forgiveness is one of the best elements of the pro-social emotions that assist in improving the mental position of an individual including the surrounding environment. Forgiveness also leads to peaceful environments. It is also described as a legal terminology for giving up all claims on the perception of debt or duty to do something (Kimonis et al., 1249). Forgiveness on social grounds is not considered in politics. This pro-social emotion gives a relief on things that cannot be replaced. The term is mostly used in religion. People spiritually understand why forgiveness is appropriate and spread it. Therefore, the mental situation of the kind person and the one forgiven is stable and at peace. Activities run well without fear of meeting the party one has offended. Thus freedom of mind and operation is restored. This implies that physical health, well being, of the human body is at peace too. Those who apply forgiveness many times achieve a lot because they save time in doing constructive
Rather than being a neutral conduit for the communication of information, the U.S. media plays an intricate role in shaping and controlling political opinions. Media is extremely powerful in the sense that without an adequate functioning media, it is virtually impossible for a sophisticated social structure like the U.S. Government to exist. Henceforth, all known sophisticated social structure, have always dependent upon the media’s ability to socialize. The U.S. government generally will exploit the media, often times manipulating the enormous power of the printed word. Ultimately empowering the U.S. government, strengthening it with the ability to determine and control the popular perception of reality. One way in which government achieves this objective, is by its ability to misuse the media’s ability to set the agenda. Contrary to popular belief, media is in fact an enormous hegemony. In fact, separate independent news organizations relatively do not exist. Rather than creating an independent structured agenda of there own, generally lesser smaller news organizations adapt to a prepared agenda, previously constructed by a higher medium. Based upon this information alone, it is quite apparent that media functions in adherence to the characteristics of a hierarchy. This simply means that media is structured in a way that it operates functioning from top to bottom. This is also identical to the hierarchical nature of the human body, in that from the commands of the brain transferred through the central nervous system, the body responds accordingly. In order for the U.S. government to control and determine the public’s popular perception of reality, the government must shape and oversee the information that the media reports to the existing populous. This particular process of democracy is known and referred to by political scientists as cognitive socialization. However, many of us, who do not adhere to the cushioning of political correctness, refer to it as the propaganda machine. Numerous political scientists consider cognitive socialization to be the most effective form of political socialization. According to theory, cognitive socialization is doctored up information, which is strategically fragmented in such a manipulative manner, that the probability of its rationalization is highly predictable. The manipulative properties of cognitive socialization are so diabolical and Machiavellian in nature, that I consider it to be the ultimate perversion of the democratic process. In all seriousness, numerous intellectuals, and gentleman held in good stature agree, that cognitive socialization is the product of an evil genius.
In modern society, public relations hold the power to influence individuals’ perspectives and opinions, through techniques of manipulation and spin. The origins of these strategies can be found in the 1928 text, Propaganda. Written by Edward Bernays, who is often referred to as the “father of spin”, the perspectives of individuals and influence in the book served as the foundation of the public relations industry. Propaganda downplays the role of human agency to craft public relations into an art of master manipulation, a perspective that is being continuously demonstrated in the modern public relations industry.
Minerals are found worldwide and have countless uses. The mineral gypsum, is just one of the thousands named. Gypsum has always been a critical mineral in the building of innumerable ancient constructions, and is still being used in today’s construction. (The History of Gypsum, 1985) It is speculated that the first use of it was in ancient Greece, where is was called “gypsos”, or “selenite”, but, gypsum’s first recorded usability was in Ancient Egypt, where it was used in the building of the Pyramids. They used the material called “Alabaster” (which is a form of gypsum), but later in the 18th century, they realized that gypsum in its natural and raw state, was much too wet, so they altered it to create the building material called “Plaster
This forgiveness does not absolve anyone of blame, but creates a space for future self-realization by refocusing the attention from the past to the present and future (Mahaffey).
It is one thing to let someone know that you messed up but complete healing comes from knowing that you are forgiven. Vice versa, instead of letting bitterness and anger towards others eat away at us, the best way to move on is to forgive. In some instances, our natural reaction is to exact revenge and that might provide temporary relief but it is a fact the forgiveness provides far greater healing and relief. The Sacrament of Reconciliation allows one to experience the fullness of forgiveness. This sacrament not only calls one to forgive others but to ask Christ for forgiveness, the most powerful forgiveness we can receive. It involves not only receiving the forgiveness but accepting it in our heart and allowing ourselves to be healed by the Holy
One of the fundamental roles of the media in a liberal democracy is to critically scrutinise governmental affairs: that is to act as a watchdog of government to ensure that the government can be held accountable by the public. However, the systematic deregulation of media systems worldwide is diminishing the ability of citizens to meaningfully participate in policymaking process governing the media (McChesney, 2003, p. 126). The relaxation of ownership rules and control, has resulted in a move away from diversity of production to a situation where media ownership is becoming increasing concentrated by just a few predominantly western global conglomerates (M...
As Zack has done research on forgiveness as well, he states, “…studies show people unwilling to extend forgiveness to someone who has done them harm will often withdraw from social relationships and tend to experience deep loneliness,” (Carter, 2017). Along with that, for one to still have hurt and negative feelings, can add to stress, which has a huge impact on our bodies physically and emotionally. The stress of unforgiving feelings can take tolls on the body, leading to health problems that shouldn’t be around, and also can slow down the process to moving on with life. But when one can forgive, going through with the process, “…extending forgiveness was essential to personal healing,” (Carter, 2017). The process of forgiving, comes with the ability to walk away knowing, one’s self will heal in time. No more harboring negative
