Meaning of a Name
What really is the meaning of a good name? A good name is a respected opinion that people have of someone or something. Having a good name is a major theme in The Crucible by Arthur Miller. In Salem, accusations of witchcraft are spiraling out of control. As a result people are accusing their friends and neighbors, and the townspeople are forced to protect their reputations. Arthur Miller shows the meaning of a good name through the characters John Proctor, Reverend Parris, and Abigail Williams.
In the play The Crucible, John Proctor refuses to blacken his good name. At the end of the play, Proctor is willing to confess he has committed adultery but will not confess to witchcraft. Keeping his good name is very important …show more content…

He is drawn into this controversy by his niece, Abigail. In the opening, he angrily says to her, "Oh, Abigail what proper payment for my charity! Now I am undone"(Miller I. 247). Parris fears that these accusations with ruin his good name. He cares more about how Abigail's actions reflect on him than her well-being. He is aware that something is happening with his niece, but just wants it to go away. For Reverend Parris, protecting his good name is more important than his family’s welfare. Lastly, one other main character in the play who is concerned about protecting her good name is Abigail Williams. However, in contrast to John Proctor, who refuses to lie because he will not tarnish his name with an untruth, Abigail is more than than willing to lie to protect her name and reputation. She tells her uncle, "There be no blush about my name...my name is good in the village! I will not have it said my name is soiled! Goody Proctor is a gossiping liar"(Miller I. 131). Ironically is it Abigail that is lying not Goody Proctor. She accuses and blames the people around her in order to deflect attention from her own actions. In her mind, lying is okay as long as it protects her
