Unforgettable
The essay Me Talk Pretty one day is a very effective as well as entertaining essay to get yourself lost in. Written by David Sedaris, he shows us truly how hard it is to acquire a new language. Despite having already taken a french class in Normandy he finds himself out of his depth and truly nervous at just the sight of his new classmates and the fluency of which they speak French. He is also unfortunately left in the hands of a cruel teacher who wants nothing more than to scrutinize the entire class, Sedaris especially. In the end through hard work, determination, and nothing short of a revelation he is finally able to decipher French to understand his teacher’s true insults, but he is proud nonetheless.
What makes this essay stand out from others is Sedaris is extremely effective in conveying how hard it is to learn a new language through his use of humor, his clever word choice and his ability to connect with his audience. He took something as simple as learning a language and turned it into a tale that people can't help but smile at.

This mostly comes in the form of his description of his teacher and the overall relative environment of the classroom. He states”The teacher licked her lips, revealing a hint of the sadist we would later come to know. She crouched low for her attack”.(pg.304) By calling her a sadist and comparing her to a predator reading to strike he effectively sets the negative opinion of how the reader will view the teacher. The teacher then continues to confirm this over and over again, telling Sedaris that she hates him in flawless English in a class forbidden to speak anything other than French, and even comparing the days spent with him to a cesarean
He talks to the teacher about the fact that his son’s teacher is saying that his son is slower than the other students, he tells the teacher how smart his son really is, that his son was taught education in a different way than most children his age “His aunts and grandmothers taught him to count and know his numbers while they sorted out the complex materials used to make the abstract designs in the native baskets” also “he was taught to learn mathematics by counting the sticks we use in our traditional native hand game”. He showed the teacher that his son is just different not a slow learner. The essay taught that people learn in different ways that does not make them slower it just makes them different. That every culture has its own ways of doing stuff and teaching. His son learned from nature and the thing around him.
In the novel, Me Talk Pretty One Day, Sedaris has used various literary terms which followed the use of a clear tone. This is clearly depicted with the author’s choice of words, as well as, figurative language. This demonstrates the author’s talent for casually laying out the absurdities of his daily experiences. In the novel, Sedaris has used a depressed tone. He explains how he is depressed by the French instructor. He explains that he is not alone to be belittled, but others also experience a similar attitude from the teacher, during the time they spent in class (Sedaris 13). He explains that the instructor wanted to put everyone down. For instance, he understood only half of what the teacher said, and that the first day that she was in class was very depressing (11). Sedaris also narrates that when the teacher asked that ‘has every one apzkiubjxow, it was very startling because he had not been asked the question for a while and realized that she did not understand the alphabet (11). The author states that the teacher always asked that ‘were you always this palicmkresis (15). It is clear that Sedaris employs nonsense letter arrangements, in order to replace the words that he could not understand (Sedaris 15). Through this, he relates his feelings with what the teacher said and this created pity for him and a mutual understanding (Sedaris 15). This demonstrates a depressed tone.
Jimmy Baca’s story “Coming into Language” describes his emotional childhood and what he went through while in prison. At seventeen Baca still didn’t know how to read or write. Throughout the story, he shares his struggle with language and how prison eventually brought himself to learn how to read and write. Jimmy Baca then uses examples in his story explaining how he admired language and used it to free himself from the cruel world he grew up in.
The author uses many examples of humorous things in the story, like irony. An example is everyone thought Casey was an awesome baseball player, as well as himself. In the end it turned out that he wasn't as good as everyone thought and or hoped.

In her short essay “Mother Tongue”, Tan discusses the internal conflict she had with the English learned from her mother to that of the English in her education. Sharing her experiences as an adolescent posing to be her mother for respect, Tan develops a frustration at the difficulty of not being taken seriously due to one’s inability to speak the way society expects. Disallowing others to prove their misconceptions of her, Tan exerted herself in excelling at English throughout school. She felt a need to rebel against the proverbial view that writing is not a strong suit of someone who grew up learning English in an immigrant family. Attempting to prove her mastery of the English language, Tan discovered her writing did not show who she truly was. She was an Asian-American, not just Asian, not just American, but that she belonged in both demographics. Disregarding the idea that her mother’s English could be something of a social deficit, a learning limitation, Tan expanded and cultivated her writing style to incorporate both the language she learned in school, as well as the variation of it spoken by her mother. Tan learned that in order to satisfy herself, she needed to acknowledge both of her “Englishes” (Tan 128).

This gave the reader a full understanding of the disadvantages Amy and her mother had with reading and writing. The Essay 'Mother Tongue' truly represents Amy Tan's love and passion for her mother as well as her writing. Finally getting the respect of her critics and lucratively connecting with the reaction her mother had to her book, 'So easy to read' (39). Was writing a book the best way to bond with your own mother? Is it a struggle to always have the urge to fit in? Was it healthy for her to take care of family situations all her life because her mother is unable to speak clear English?
Christopher’s disability leaves him unable to comprehend between actual fact and modified fast. Because of this, he has a difficult time interpreting when people use similes and metaphors when they speak to him. He interprets everything he hears literally and because of that, he has a hard time understanding humor, which in turn, negatively affects his ability to ‘blend in’ with others and make friends. In “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”, Benjamin is an outcast with a witty sense of humor, so the author adds different types of irony. Fitzgerald adds situational irony by describing in the beginning how the “proper thing to be born at home” (Fitzgerald), yet Benjamin was born at the hospital and as they would soon find out, Benjamin had far from the proper, standard birth. Benjamin was not a typical child, for Fitzgerald uses verbal irony to say “the rattle bored him” (Fitzgerald.).
What's interesting about the book is the way it circles around the loss of language and the question of Sedaris' own facility with writing (Brown). Either way, there is an incredible, unique beauty in it. Every language is different; they sound different, read different, even feel different on the tongue. But there is always a beauty hidden within the words – a magical, musical quality – that comes from the soul of the speaker. This quality, however, is often lost when a person is forced to speak an unfamiliar language. The fluidity of speech is replaced by complex mechanics – syntax – that complicates pure communication. That being said, an immigrant or bilingual person who is forced to adapt to a foreign country’s language faces many challenges. They are threatened with the possibility of losing the intimacy of their primary language, but also must consider the personal advantages of speaking the majority’s language.
