McGregor and Big Sandy Lake, Minnesota
My favorite place to be would be the city and are of McGregor Minnesota. About eight miles north of the small town is Big Sandy Lake, which is where my cabin is located. This is truly my favorite place to be, especially during the warm summer months.
McGregor, a small town of only about four hundred people, is located in a wooded area with many lakes, streams and river. The biggest lake is Big Sandy and is approximately seven thousand acres of water area.
It would be fair to say that McGregor is a summer town. The town and its population depend heavily on the financial income that Big Sandy and other lakes draw in the summer. McGregor has no big industry nearby and there are not too many farms in the area either. In the summer, especially during the weekends the lakes get flooded with people from the Minneapolis-St.Paul area, who head up to their cabins for the weekend. These weekends make up the financial backbone of McGregor. The town itself is like most small towns. They have a hardware store, post office, dentist, church, school and the usual suspects. The unusual thing about the town is the number of gift shops it has. Gift shops probably make up half of the buildings in the town. The occupants of McGregor are like people in most small towns in Minnesota. They are mostly white with a few Native and African Americans. Most of the people are friendly and all have their sense of small town pride.

... sits on Webster Bay. It has been in my family since the early nineteen sixties when my grandma bought a cabin and her sisters bought the cabin right next to it. It was constructed by the late Wally Ecklund who did a marvelous job building it according to some newer contractors. Right now my cabin is in the process of being remodeled. We have an excellent lake view with a beautiful natural sand beach. It is my favorite place to be on the face of this earth.
In conclusion, Big Sandy Lake and McGregor Minnesota are two truly great places. The people are some of the friendliest around. There is always things going to keep even the most wild of hearts satisfied. If you are a fan of the outdoors and lakes and such then Big Sandy Lake is the right place to go. It's not necessarily the lake that is the most fun but the people around the lake that make it truly special.
The lake itself plays a major role throughout the story, as it mirrors the characters almost exactly. For example, the lake is described as being “fetid and murky, the mud banks glittering with broken glass and strewn with beer cans” (125). The characters are also described as being “greasy” or “dangerous” several times, which ties the lake and the characters together through their similarities. The narrator explains, “We were bad. At night we went up to Greasy Lake” (124). This demonstrates the importance that the surroundings in which the main characters’ choose to be in is extremely important to the image that they reflect. The Jump-Off Creek introduces the reader to the unforgiving Blue Mountains and the harsh pioneer lifestyle with the tale of Lydia Sanderson, a widow who moves west from Pennsylvania to take up residence in a rundown homestead. She and other characters battle nature, finances, and even each other on occasion in a fight for survival in the harsh Oregon wilderness. Although the story is vividly expressed through the use of precise detail and 1800s slang, it failed to give me a reason to care because the characters are depicted as emotionally inhibited.
King writes, “You had your crazy drunk husband, your cowering terrified family, your heroic passerby (no indication what he’d been passing by on his way to). What else did you need?...It was all so Derry.” (King, 237). These words that King writes so detailed puts a sour taste in your mouth by portraying how negative the city is and the stench that floats in the air.

In the story Dubliners by James Joyce, he writes about a few different themes, some of these being autonomy, responsibility, light, and dark. The most important of the themes though must be the individual character in the story against the community and the way they see it. I have chosen to take a closer look at “Araby,” “Eveline,” and “The Dead” because the great display of these themes I feel is fascinating. Many things affect the way the individual characters see the community, for example their family, friends, fellow citizens, or even new places. In Dubliners, the way the characters see the community affects them and other people around them.
Up to act one, Friel presents us with a tight knit and well-bonded community of people. People bonded by their nationality, culture and language. This of course is extremely ironic (Friel uses irony quite heavily in this play, for example the fact that Jimmy-Jack is called the "infant prodigy", he is in-fact in his late sixties. His name indicates that he has always been at the same precocious level of ability and he is unlikely to advance any further), the fact that the whole play is about the English renaming most of Ireland for conveniences sake. Also the English are teaching most of Ireland how to speak English, moving them away from their traditional Gaelic tongue. The English settlers are breaking up the community.
In Crow Lake, Mary Lawson portrays a family who experience a great tragedy when Mr. and Mrs. Morrison are killed in a car accident. This tragedy changes the lifestyles of the seven years old protagonist Kate Morrison and her siblings Matt, Luke and Bo. The settings are very important in this novel. Though there are limited numbers of settings, the settings used are highly effective. Without effective use of themes in this novel, the reader would not have been able to connect with the characters and be sympathetic. Lawson uses an exceptionally high degree of literary devices to develop each character in this novel.

In Dubliners, many themes are introduced to the readers to help understand the main focus of Dublin at the time. Characters are always placed within society and are always trying to escape the problems geared toward them. To continue, feelings of aloneness bring escape throughout things such as journeys away from the city Characters are always trying to find a way to get away from everyday life and the certain realities that are shared between everyone. People are always escaping through journeys and also through other people but are always trying to find places to be alone. In all three stories, the circumstances of Dublin at the time have individuals expressing the need to escape society and the realities of everyday life.

The future of Ireland will only get worst and be cold and pitiful. The snow at the end that covered all of Ireland symbolizes how their lives have been frozen and that they all have been trapped in a state of paralysis. That people are never willing to break away from their comfort zone, no matter how bad it is. Characters are blinded by all their emotion, physical, and sexual problems until The Dead when Gabriel’s epiphany is one that all of Ireland needs to see. Each individual should open their eyes and see the real world, not live behind a lens. The Irish are barely surviving in Ireland, the snow all over Ireland represents how alone, hopeless, and ignorant the people and country of Dublin are.
