3b. The books talk about the masculinity or tough man representation in crime films. The book also talks about the prison and the power to reform. A prison is a place where people are supposed to pay their punishment but it is also a place where people are humiliated like what we see in American History X when the guard yells and talks in an unprofessional manner to the inmates. Prisons are inhumane. Derek was reformed not by the prison itself, but by the actions of his fellow inmate who changed Derek’s perspectives towards minorities in particular to African Americans. 3c. Stereotypes within our society have shaped the way we perceive each other. Throughout the book Punished by Victor Rios, a lot of stereotypes were not only reinforced but also used against a lot of the boys. A lot of the boys presented throughout the book had never actually committed a crime but they were treated as if they had. These boys were constantly labeled and categorized, like folders into a filling cabinet or a bin. Sure Oakland, California had a lot of gang-infested areas but that does not mean everyone in that area is part of a gang or is committing a crime. Thus, this book really demonstrates how one can be perceived or labeled as a criminal due to his or her surroundings and how these stereotypes can destroy one’s chance of freedom.
It is 1787 in the home of Benjamin Franklin where a group of powerful Philadelphians held in high esteem have congregated to deliberate a very pressing issue. They are conversing on the present prison institutions established across America and Europe. It seems that the institutions in both countries are known for their appalling conditions. Benjamin Franklin and his colleagues have set out to change the course of prison history. Their plan is to make a prison system based entirely on reform and enlightenment instead of punishment and misery. They believe prisoners should repent and seek God to help them learn from their mistakes, hence the name penitentiary. After many long years, the men finally reach success and the Eastern State Penitentiary is opened in 1829. America was in a time of reform which was obvious by the opening of such a diverse prison. But no matter how much the Eastern State Penitentiary claims to be averse to torture and harsh conditions, it was after all a prison. From the outside, the Eastern State Penitentiary appeared to be marvelous and sensational, but what went on inside of those massive walls was something entirely different. Life at the Eastern State Penitentiary was unspeakable because of the cell life, disease, and treatment that the inmates had to endure.
Masculinity in film: The Incredibles. The movie that I chose to research was The Incredibles. Overall, I really enjoyed this movie because I thought it gave a really wholesome view of family. I was very pleased with how much Mr Incredible grew as a person throughout the story.

The documentary, Hard Time: Worse of the Worse offered an eye-opening glimpse into the American prison system. The film showed the American prison system is one with strict rules to follow, ran with a zero tolerance policy. The documentary was an accurate portrayal of how prison life is that offered adequate information of how inmates behind bars live their lives day to day in a maximum-security prison. It was interesting to see a documentary on a maximum-security prison, since it is less common amongst the security types. The documentary depicted the American prison system to be ruthless, rule orientated, and militaristic with high security discipline, and its own prison subculture.
Richard is defining himself as a black boy in the Jim Crow South, but he is also open to the ideas and separate interpretations to further his knowledge on what exactly that means for him. Richard’s writing reflects his experiences, direct or indirect, like Bigger with his incarceration, and himself on discovering true segregation and unequal rights. The theme of Black Boy is paradoxical because is it unknown as to whether he will ever discover the secrets behind becoming a black man, and not only a black man, but a black man who had grown in the middle of the entire dispute. The book share violence but in the most informative way; without the violence the true South would not have been expressed in the novel, and as a reader you could not grasp his emotions on the topics he presents on himself like how he had suffered but his suffrage was caused by his own mothers suffrage and so on. Walter Dean Myer’s book Monster depicts how the American legal system functions. The primary theme of the story is to examine how a person who commits a crime is arrested, convicted, tried, and punished. This book looks at the legal system through the eyes of a young, African American teenager. He paints horrible images of life in jail (but keep in mind… this is a detention center or equivalent to juvenile hall, not the state or federal penitentiary). Further, Myers brings to point that everyone who is sentences to this facility is to be punished, whether they are guilty or innocent. By the end of the story, Steve has a different outlook… things are typically not as bad as you initially think they are… it is all in how you view things.
What I’ve observed to be pressing problems at the Washtenaw County Jail are the following: 1) the hostility that the incarcerated women embody; 2) the effect that having only one hour of free time has on prisoners’ psyches when they are in the maximum security portion of the jail; 3) the social stigma that a freed inmates faces when he/she has to identify that they’ve been to jail. All three problems have impacted me someway either during our sessions or outside of class. Furthermore, all problems have, as causes, situations dealing with privilege and oppression.
John Wayne epitomizes masculinity, and did throughout his tenured Hollywood career. He is regarded as an iconic male actor on account of his voice, height, and mannerisms. Wayne’s female counterpart, Maureen O’Hara, was antithetically famous for her stunning beauty and typical portrayal of a heroine. Their character’s tumultuous relationship and the obstacles they face accentuate the internal struggle that a masculine family man must face: torn between serving his country and serving his family.
Others often use masculinity, most often associated with strength, confidence and self-sufficiency to define a man’s identity. The narrator perceives Tyler Durden as a fearless young man who is independent and living life by his own rules. So is Tyler Durden masculine because of his no nonsense attitude or are his law breaking antics and unusual lifestyle seen as a failure because he is a man with neither family, money nor a well respected job? These typical aspirations are commonly defined as the male American dream, but does following life by the rulebook placed on males by society really make a male masculine? Fight Club specifically debunks the male American dream. It challenges’ the idea that the masculine identity is defined by material items and instead embraces the idea that masculine identity can be found in liberation from conformity and the ability to endure pain.
Knowing and understanding the author’s purpose, we see where he is coming from and what his “point of view” is. We see that the author is someone that does not agree with the activities that occur in the native prison. It makes the author feel uncomfortable with the establishment and its procedures.

Whether it is positive or negative, anyone important in a child's eyes can dramatically impact how they will act, think, or believe. The teens from American History X were all looking for something to hold on to and to be a part of? It is hard to see Derek, Danny and all the others fall for the lies and propaganda set forth by the adults. It's hard to see peers pressure their gang mates into believing something so strongly that they'd rather kill a traitor than forgive a friend. It's hard to see all the hate, anguish, and pain in the film. Surprisingly, there is a silver lining, giving us hope that one positive influence in the lives of children can be enough to turn them from racism and to a better life.
James, in the women’s prison there is a significant difference than the men’s prison. That is true that in the men’s prison they are divided by race, and they use that division for some protection in the gang. The women’s prisons react similarly than the men, but they use the family setting as a way to protect each other.
