Masculinity and femininity are both a part of life. However, there is a price to pay for overemphasizing masculinity. In Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe uses Okonkwo’s life to illustrate the costs of being overly concerned with manliness. In Things Fall Apart, Okonkwo is very concerned with being the antithesis of his father. Consequently, he cannot be content with Nwoye’s soft personality, and is constantly trying to change him. Eventually Nwoye changed, but not to Okonkwo’s liking. The father disowns the son for abandoning the tribal ancestors and gods for the “effeminate” Christian faith. As Okonkwo reflects on Nwoye’s actions he recalls that he was dubbed the “Roaring Flame” and realizes that the product of flame is cold ash (153). Okonkwo
