In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller, the characters true colors come out through the play. The play was based in 1692 when the Salem witch trials started in Colonial Massachusetts. Nineteen men and women and two dogs were convicted and hanged for witchcraft during the persecutions. The purpose of this drama is to show the historical background of the Salem witch trials. Though Mary Warren is a likable character, she ultimately proves herself to be spineless. In Act 1 Mary tells the girls the whole town’s talking witchcraft and wants Abigail to tell the truth. She tells Abigail and Mercy that she never participated in the rituals or the dancing but just watched. In Act 2 she comes home late but with good news for the proctor
