Your honor before we start I would just like to inform you that I am very happy that during this case you will you logic and evidence to decide the fate of my client Martha Carrier. In this case I will be defending Martha Carrier against the charge of witchcraft. One of the main allegations that has been presented by the prosecutor is that the defendant killed the cows of several villagers. The accusers of this crime are Mr. Abbot, Mr.Toothaker, Mr. Rogger, Mr.Preston. They all state that after some confrontation with the defendant their cow or in some instances several cows died from no seeable natural causes. Now blaming this on witchcraft when there are other plausible reasons is ridiculous it is possible that the cows caught a disease as this would show no outward sign other than possibly …show more content…

For Ms.Chandler the swelling could simply be an allergic reaction to some food she ate and saying it was Ms.Carrier who poisoned her has no physical evidence to back that claim. Also she herself said that she was hearing voices in her head which brings into question her mental sanity. Either way both defendant had motivations against the defendant so there testimony can also be brought into question. The last accusation I will address is the multiple people saying she has bewitched them and have reacted in this courtroom as such. Now I use the word acted because that describes them perfectly their reactions can be completely scripted as such this alone is not enough to convict my client on the charge of witchcraft. So far all accusations against my client have been seen as explainable or disprovable so I must ask that you release my client and allow her to return home to her family. Now please decide using logic and reasoning as your aids for this

This trend was the result of a multitude of social developments which altered the mentality of society. One of the predominant factors in this decline was the Scientific Revolution, the most important effect of these advances was making society question concepts of witchcraft. Along with this new mental outlook, we see that the Reformation had a similar effect on social opinion concerning witchcraft and magic. The council that were to find these people’s innocence or guilt were corrupted as well because to claim innocence meant you were guilty and if you were to claim guilt you could be redeemed. Many of the items found incriminating were pins and voodoo dolls. Many of these people faced the psychological terror of being pressured into claiming guilt to a crime, you didn’t commit in front of a committee and scared the community to death that they were going to be subjected to. Many of the witnesses to these trials were said to have undergone physical distress or act inhumanly. Many historians say to these records that since their body was put under so much strain and fear of the witchcraft that surrounded them all the time, their bodies going through strange changes such as paralysis or temporary blindness with no real cause rather than stress. But many historians also believe the witnesses were voluntarily acting and committing fraud against the others.
