In the years of 1815­1860, the Market Revolution was underway, as was the Second Great Awakening in America. It was a liberating time to be a female. The Market Revolution created opportunity for women that wouldn’t have been dreamed of in years past and the Second Great Awakening helped to forge a new perspective of them. Women could now make their own living, being drawn out from the more rural parts like many others and their responsibility as moral head of the family was now recognized, though it came to expand beyond the family as well. New opportunity beckoned from the city factories. As farming technology improved, more raw materials were available and from less labor. As machinery improved, manufactured goods became easier and less expensive to produce, making homemade goods more and more obsolete. The domestic types employed in agriculture and crafting were lured to the cities, including women.
