Marked and unmarked themes
The concept of marked and unmarked theme. An unmarked feature is the ordinary, expected, usual form, while marked feature is unusual in some way, less expected or less common occcuring. In the explanation before, theme is usually the subject of sentence. So, the unmarked theme occur in statement (a declarative sentence) is the subject. A marked theme occur in anything else.
Unmarked theme can occur :
a. The subject may consist of a single word.
Example :
Marry had alittle lamb

b. The subject may consist of a non phrase containing pre-and/or post modifiers. Example :
Its fleece was white as snow
Theme rheme
c. The subject may consist of a noun clause.
Example :
What i want is a god cup of tea

Marked theme is included adverbials, fronted object, and fronted head of a verb phrase. Adverbial as theme may be adverbs or adverb phrases or they may be preposional phrases.
a. A sentence with an adverb as theme and one with a preposional phrase as theme respectively.

b. Fronted objects as marked nominal themes and fronted subject complement. Exanple :

For exampple it was great deal of publicity that the book received in china, it was the book tha received a great deal of publicity in china or it was in china that the book received a great deal of publicity. the theme of an it –structure is not it but rather the element which occurs after the verb to be. It simply acts as an empty subject which allows a certain element such as the book or in china to be placed near the beginning of the clause and to be interreted as its theme, that is what the message is

In To Kill a Mockingbird, the theme plays an important role during the course of the novel. Theme is a central idea in a work of literature that contains more than one word. It is usually based on an author’s opinion on a subject. The theme of innocence should be protected is found in conflicts, characters, and symbols. In To Kill a Mockingbird, a conflict that connects to the theme that innocence should be protected is the death of Tom Robinson.
Literary devices are tools used by the author to help the reader understand a given literary work. Writers use different literary devices depending on their style and what they wish their reader to get out of their work. One important literary device that is essential for a successful literary work is theme. Theme is the general insight into life that the author shares with the reader. There are a number of different methods from which an author can choose to present his/her theme. One common strategy is to communicate the theme through the use of mood; the overall feeling or emotion conjured within the reader. In Edgar Allan Poe's short story, "The Cask of Amontillado," and in Saki's short story, "The Interlopers," the mood evoked within the reader is used to communicate the short story's overall theme.
The theme in a story is a message or lesson that the author wants the reader to take away when reading the story. These themes can teach the reader lessons, get points across or help them understand the book better. All Quiet On The Western Front displays the themes: the horrors and destruction of war and the effects on soldiers, sacrifice, loss of innocence, and friendship.
In the short story “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” by Joyce Carol Oates, many elements of fiction are used to convey subject of themes represented throughout the story, such as disguises. Throughout the story the use of characterization, detail, and allusions represents the presence evil in the modern world. Oates used these elements to capture evil that illustrates the theme that ‘Looks can be deceiving’.
I must agree with Mr. Malone since as much as you’d expect her to destroy peter in her story she gives him a sense of indifference, but one would come to expect that from him since through out the story she seems to plot out his character. Now the way that the story seems to not unravel till the end is interesting, it kind of takes you along a calm river ride with a smooth NIAGRA FALL ending.
In the world of literature, there are many themes that exist in a variety of genres. In the Gettysburg Address, a speech made by 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, Lincoln tries to reassure listeners that the country’s problems will be resolved in the midst of war. The American Civil War has caused many domestic issues, provoking panic from the general public. George J. Mitchell’s opinion essay, Peace isn’t Impossible, attempts to convince readers that the conflicts and tensions in Northern Ireland should end as soon as possible. Catholics and Protestants, to this day, are in tensions and turmoil, over the topic of religion. The visual, A Man Knows a Man, drawn by an unknown artist, tries to convey the union of the North and South after the American Civil War. In the war, the North and South divided over states’ rights and slavery debates. Lastly, Liam O’Flaherty’s short story The Sniper, illustrates the events that take place two brothers, on opposing sides, during the Irish Civil War. The main character, the Republican sniper, favors independent rule by the Irish, while the brother, who is a Free-Stater, favors the division of Ireland by the British.
To begin, theme emerges within the exposition of the plot structure as conflict is introduced to the text.
Theme is the subject of talk, a topic, or morals that the author is trying to get readers to comprehend. When reading an excerpt, the theme is not directly stated in the text, so you must dig deeper into the context to understand the matter trying to be portrayed. In both Angela's Ashes and The Street, we can distinguish a like theme of struggling through life’s complications. After reading the two different stories, we could select the theme from using character, events, and the setting.
A stated theme is a theme “that the other expresses directly in his work (protic.net); an implied theme is a theme “that is not directly stated in the work” (protic.net). As mentioned before, both of these stories have an implied theme, which now is revealed to mean that the author of the story insinuated it. Themes exist in all stories (verbal or written) and can be long, short, true or false.
One example of the theme occurs when the author first introduces the story. “But the summer I was 9 years old, the town I had always loved morphed into a beautifully heartbreaking and complicated place.” (pg. 1). The author is saying that the year she turned nine, she found out something about her town that broke her heart and changed the way she saw it. This quote is important because it supports the theme. It shows that now she is older she has learned something about her town that made her wiser than when she was younger. She is now more informed because the new information changed her and caused her to begin to mature.
One of the many main pieces that makes up a literary work is the theme that is shown through the story. A theme is a core or main idea that a literary work is trying to teach or tell the reader. An author can develop a theme through many things. One of those things that can be seen in the three short stories is symbolism. The three short stories that are being spoken of are Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, What You Pawn I Will Redeem by Sherman Alexie, and The Moustache by Robert Cormier. The theme is all three of the short stories is developed through the authors’ use of symbolism.
Theme plays a very important part in this short story. Theme is the idea of a literary work abstracted from its details of language, character and action. If there was no underlining theme in Sherman Alexie’s short story, “This Is What It Means to Say Phoenix, Arizona” then readers would have no interest in reading the fictional story. Understanding the message that Alexie is trying to display to his readers can vary in many ways and depends on the reader 's understanding of the story. Strong themes that are presented in the fictional tale are man versus self conflict, family, and tribal identity.
