Even though Florida has developed and changed along with society, we can still tie ourselves to the old Florida and our heritage. The Marjorie Rawlings literary work allows us to go back and relive old Florida and what it was like back when cowboys were the keepers of the land. Today much of our pastures and scrubland have now turned into resorts and golf courses to accommodate our ever growing population. While this shift from agrarian to industrial has occurred, there are organizations and groups of people that are trying to help preserve the old Florida that we once knew.

Annie Turnbo Malone was an entrepreneur and was also a chemist. She became a millionaire by making some hair products for some black women. She gave most of her money away to charity and to promote the African American. She was born on august 9, 1869, and was the tenth child out of eleven children that where born by Robert and Isabella turnbo. Annie’s parents died when she was young so her older sister took care of her until she was old enough to take care of herself.
From being a competitor on Dancing with the Stars, to an actress on Switched at Birth, Marlee Matlin is known for her overflowing amount of talents. She seems to do it, and quite effortlessly while she’s at it. But, the one thing she cannot do, is hear. To quite a few people, this may seem as a disadvantage, but to Marlee this is quite the opposite. She embraces her uniqueness and strives to show her disbelievers that she is capable of anything that she sets her mind to. Despite the many challenges she has faced, Marlee Matlin remains determined, unique, and an advocate for the Deaf culture.
Kathleen Orr, popularly known as Kathy Orr is a meteorologist for the Fox 29 Weather Authority team on WTXF in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was born on October 19, 1965 and grew up in Westckave, Geddes, New York with her family. The information about her parents and her siblings are still unknown. As per bio obtained online, Kathy Orr is also an author. She has written a number of books like Seductive Deceiver, The drifter's revenge and many others. She graduated in Public Communications from S. I. Newhouse which is affiliated to Syracuse University.

She was the first African American Texas state senator. Jordan was also a debater, a public speaker, a lawyer, and a politician. Barbara Jordan was a woman who always wanted things to be better for African Americans and for all United States citizens. “When Barbara Jordan speaks,” said Congressman William L.Clay, “people hear a voice so powerful so, awesome...that it cannot be ignored and will not be silenced.”
Mary Wade, born on the 5th of October 1777 was the youngest convict to be sent to Australia. Before her life as a convict, she would sweep and beg on the streets of London to make her living.
Mary Bryant was in the group of the first convicts (and the only female convict) to ever escape from the Australian shores. Mary escaped from a penal colony which often is a remote place to escape from and is a place for prisoners to be separated. The fact that Bryant escaped from Australia suggests that she was a very courageous person, this was a trait most convicts seemed to loose once they were sentenced to transportation. This made her unique using the convicts.
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Willoughby’s writing is that so much change has occurred in the past hundred years. His setting, though the very Everglades we travel through today, is an Everglades where saw grass was ten feet tall, and trails were no where to be found. His Florida, though located exactly where he left it, now has too many hotels, tourists, and residents to count. The change that has taken place in Florida was one that Willoughby foreshadowed, and one that we would not be able to fully comprehend without the writings of people like Willoughby. He captured the moment on paper for the future to see and gave us a means of comparison. He wrote about change in Florida over the course of a year since his previous visit. He mentioned that a big hotel and bustling tourists destroyed the picturesque and that Florida’s “wilderness has been rudely marred by the hand of civilization” (62). The State of Florida’s marine ecosystems are in a constant pattern of change. Change is necessary in nature. Change is nature’s way of adaptation. While there are “occasional good” changes, the progressive major changes have a devastating negative impact to the Florida marine environment. There are several factors correlated directly to this negative change. Most of these factors are due to man. One cause is natural. It is the hurricane. Within the state of Florida there are dozens of individualized, non-profit organizations making an effort to help the local wildlife. The local land and marine wildlife includes birds, geckos, frogs, snakes, panthers, manatees, sea turtles, fishes, sharks, corals, lizards and many, many more. Florida State is located on the Southeastern tip of the United States providing a unique opportunity for conservation of salt-water animals. While there are animal conservation efforts taking place all over the world, this essay will focus on two animal species that humans are specifically trying to save in Florida State. The two main animal species of focus are manatees and sea turtles.

Gertrude Ederle was a famous American swimmer who was born on October 23, 1906 in New York City, New York. Ederle loved the sport of swimming ever since she was a child, and she held 29 national and world amateur swimming records between 1921 and 1925. She also broke seven swimming records on afternoon at Brighton Beach, New York. With a time of seven hours and eleven minute, Gertrude Ederle broke the old men’s record of swimming from New York Battery to Sandy Hook, New Jersey. In the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris, France, Ederle won the bronze medal in the 100 meter, and the 400 meter freestyle events. She also won the gold medal in the 4x100 meter freestyle relay.
If most of us were asked to name a popular tourist destination in Florida, we would respond quickly by saying, “Oh, that’s easy. It’s Orlando.” But the question is: Do we actually know the origin of Orlando’s name? Orlando, Florida was first called Jernigan for Aaron Jernigan, an early settler. It was later renamed to honor Orlando Reeves, an army sentry killed during the Seminole Wars. “Prior to the American Civil War, the area was a cotton and cattle centre”; just imagine seeing cows grazing on what is now the site of Disney World (Orlando).
