Maria is a minor character in the novel Nanberry and she is also important to the novel’s storyline. She is important because she is the maid and cook for Surgeon White and once Surgeon White takes Nanberry into care, Maria becomes the carer for him as well. An example of how important and useful Maria is to the plot is uncovered early in the novel when she says, “I’m sick of being his maid and cook”. If Maria thought about it in a more positive way she could have enjoyed it more and she could have made the most of it as she did the wrong thing in the first place. Another character that has equal value as Maria is Colbee.

The author explains different situations she has been exposed to throughout her life. The main factor that differentiates her case from the others is her level of education. She has been educated and has been exposed to two different cultures. Due to these factors, she knows how to behave under different circumstances. A good example is when a drunk man offended her and she reacted by walking away instead of creating a big discussion. Maria’s friend complemented her for the cool handling of the situation. Another reason why she feels so proud of herself is because she took advantage of that education chance and does everything possible to keep growing up. She explains that sometimes she is sent to that “kitchen” where she belongs. Her genes will follow her everywhere and not matter where she is at, people will keep asking her where is she from.

Ask me who my favorite musical artist is, and I would say “Tori Kelly” in a heartbeat. Her music and her amazing personality are an inspiration in my life. I feel as though in today’s society, artists can portray the wrong ideas to people my age. But, Kelly is always true to herself and the lyrics in her songs speak my mind. I think that speaking truthfully and inspiring her fans, is her goal in music. Tori Kelly is a respectable artist because she shows young women about having confidence in themselves. Her powerful sound and pure lyrics explain to the audience that it is okay for them to be themselves. Kelly talks about her struggles with boys, independence, and strength, and her music is a great piece of empowerment for all young women.
