Margaret Chan's International Public Health Employees Provide Global Services

International Public Health employees are an integral part of the health system throughout the globe. These workers play a large role in helping systems become more culturally appropriate and relevant to the idea of the health problems that not only states in the US face, but all over the world. Public health workers main goal is to identify the particular health care needs of individuals in a community or target area. There are many important people within the field of public health, however, very few members are publicly well-known. Not many women in the health field are publicly I decided to profile an important person within the field known internationally, Margaret Chan. Chan has been the current general director of the World Health Organization (WHO) for the past seven years. Serving her second term at WHO has since made Chan the most powerful person in global public health and the only person with the authority to call a worldwide pandemic. The WHO is a specialized agency of the United Nations that is involved with international public health.

Margaret Chan has previously been involved in the health field for many years before becoming appointed as general director at WHO. Before beginning her transition into health, Chan was a trained Home Economics teacher in Hong Kong, where she was originally born. After teaching, Chan earned a bachelor’s degree in public health and a doctorate of medicine at the University of Western Ontario. After this, she went on to earn her masters of science in the field of Public Health at the national university of Singapore. Despite the downsides of negative scrutiny from the public, it is without doubt that Chan’s position comes with an increasing amount of power and accomplishment. She is currently ranked 59 on the Forbes list of The 72 Who Rule the World as one of the most powerful people and 33 on the Forbes list of The 100 Women Who Are Redefining Power as well. Overall, it is extremely reassuring knowing that if women such as Ms. Chan can build an immensely successful career from working hard in the public health field, I can do the same. If in Chan’s position, I don’t know how well I’d be able to handle all the situations she’s faced with, however I’d be grateful to be in such a dominant position. To this day, Margaret Chan continues to be one of the world’s top female moguls in the health field, admired by people all around the world.
