Mao Zedong Mao Zedong was a peasant who through time evolved to be a dictator of China. For around twenty five years, he led approximately a quarter of the world’s population. Before coming to power, China was a weak country. Zedong made great efforts to help increase China’s power, but he encountered many issues. Mao Zedong had good intentions, but his failed reforms made him a poor leader which resulted in the death of millions. Zedong was born December 26th of 1893 to a family of peasants and lived in the city of Shaoshan in the Hunan province of central China. He got little education as a child and often worked in the fields as part of the farming community. He then also became an inaugural member of the Chinese Communist Party in 1921. He had begun sharing his belief that farming peasants could better help to start communism in Asia. However, the Chinese leader of 1923 set a policy to gain the alliance and cooperation of these Chinese communists. This President died in 1925 leaving Chiang Kai-Shek as his replacement. He broke the alliance in 1927. When his army of peasants were defeated, Zedong went to the Jiangxi Province so they could reorganize. While there, Zedong established and became a chairman for the Soviet Republic of China. This started the growth of his power and by 1934 more than 10 regions were under his control. Feeling his control was being threatened, Chiang led small raids and later surrounded Zedong’s regions planning to completely abolish them. Zedong had heard of his plan and led his people on the Long March to escape. Unfortunately, only about 30,000 of the 100,000 that went had survived the long journey. They ended in the city of Yanan, where many people began migrating to when they heard how Zedong had escaped the extermination of Chiang.
