There are different factors that can cause this happening. The most dangerous one is for sure social factor. Almost in all level of our life, as in behavior, situations and preferences, also in clothing we fight for individuality, goal to accept others. Whether we like it or not, but whenever choosing clothes, we subconsciously ask the question if it is fashionable and what others think of me.
Our personal and business life depends on our appearance and relationships with people in general. We can have amazing talents and be good people, but no one will appreciate that if you do not pay enough attention to your appearance. Every time we meet a person for the first time, we look out on the way he is dressed. How a person perceives their body is influenced by what it looks like to them and what it looks like to others. Our society teaches us through media and social pressure that body image is important. Feeling attractive is an important part of self worth and for many, feeling attractive means matching a certain ideal appearance. Most of us will never be able to look like this ideal, but the message we get is that we risk social failure if we do not try hard enough. When we believe this message we may feel incompetent and depressed and have low self-esteem because we cant meet impossible standards of appearance.

Midterm Paper Developmental Efforts Related to Adolescent Obesity Qualitative Research “More than one third of our children and adolescents in our country are now overweight or obese” (Kids and Obesity). This epidemic is also skyrocketing the occurrence of disorders and other health issues such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, asthma, bone and joint problems, weight problems and obesity. But obesity can also affect adolescents on a deeper level, especially those of lower socioeconomic classes. Depression and low self esteem is also directly related to obesity and has high tendencies to lead to substance abuse in males and eating disorders in females (weight problems and obesity).
Looking beautiful and having a thin body has become a norm today, which everyone wants to achieve it today. People are bombarded with amazing beautiful images from watching television, surfing the internet and reading magazines, which forces people emotionally to become like them. People believe today that perfect beauty and thinness is a norm and it is achievable by wearing beautiful clothes, applying makeup and by reshaping the body. Media has taken over people mind by pressurizing them to look like celebrities and one of those images sticking on those beauty and health relates magazines and ads.
Research in psychology today seems to be drawn towards particular fields of interest especially when it comes to understanding human behavior. One of the most common research topics for social psychology is body image and the perceptions that are related to age groups, genders, and ethnicities. Young people today are pressured by society to make physical appearance a dominant factor in their everyday lives, and the pressure is found not only through media influence but friends and family as well (Pavica, 2010). These pressures can affect many different aspects of a person’s life and significantly influence their actions. The aspects affected by body image can include popularity among peers, social comfort, and the attitudes an individual comes to commit to behavior (Lewis & Rosenblum, 1999).
Men and woman have the same conflict when it comes to body image. For example a woman can see a beautiful model on a cover of a magazine, while skimming through that magazine she only finds beautiful flawless women. She might ask herself why she doesn’t look like that, where a certain obsession may develop. Same goes for men. Media has made it more than aware that beauty is characterized by perfection. “These interactions help define the self (Oxford, p. 653). Media 's Idea of Self Today 's media focuses on body image, especially a woman 's outward appearance and the size of her waist. The media typically uses models, actresses, and singers, such as Victoria Beckham to relay these values.” Jenna West, stated that the emphasize now is based on the simple appearance, which in most cases people love to see below average female waists, the smaller she is the more beautiful she looks. Symbolic Interaction plays a huge role in society, if we see someone that we do not look like we immediately start comparing each other and become self-conscious of the way you look now.
