Japanese culture has its own unique form of comic books named Manga and animation named Anime. These exist simply because the Japanese have an inexplicable fondness for visual art. Manga and Anime remain deep-rooted in Japanese culture even though they were exposed to various wars and invasions.

Why Does It Exist?
Like most comics, manga (roughly translated as “whimsical pictures”) is a narrative made up of images presented in a sequence. The earliest examples of Japanese sequential art are thought to date back to 12th century scrolls. These picture scrolls combined the visual and written media to tell stories or to describe happenings. So now we can ask ourselves: “How much market share does manga have?” The gross sales from publishing in 2002 were 2.3 trillion yen. That is 2.2 billion dollars. In western culture, there are traditions of illustrating story telling like tapestries and religious paintings. Thus manga are a combination of such tradition and to an addition, they have dialogues, which add expressions and emotions to it, making it not only a part of its art but also its emotional shell.

The unique quality of manga is that unlike American comics and French bande dessinées (BD), it’s got genres for almost every age group: boys, girls, youth, young women, office workers, people in their 40s and 50s.

Its widespread cognizance has given a boost to various downstream industries. They’ve promoted not only the publishing sector but also gaming, animation, books, television and the world wide web. Companies like Bandai Company Ltd. (3rd largest toy producer on a global scale), Nintendo (largest video game company by revenue in the world), Animax (the first and largest 24-hour network dedicated to anime in the world), mangareader (4 million dollars estimated on 16th may 2012) are some recognized brands, which flourished due to the impact of manga.
