World War I was fought between 1914 and 1918, with most battles occurring in Europe. The Great War between the allied powers and the central powers was the first major war to use airplanes. Many heroes emerged from the war, but perhaps the most famous of these is Manfred von Richthofen, a German fighter pilot.
Manfred von Richthofen was born May 2, 1892 in Breslau, Germany. From early childhood, his parents knew that he would be in the army. What they didn't know, was that he would one day grow up to be one of the most decorated fighter pilots in Germany. Manfred von Richthofen, better known as the Red Baron, started training to enter of the army at the age of eleven. At the age of nineteen he joined the German Cavalry. Within just a year of joining the cavalry, he was promoted to Lieutenant!
Manfred was twenty-two years old when World War I began. Soon the fighting in the Western Front turned into trench warfare; because of this there was little use for Calvary in the trenches. Manfred then started delivering messages along the front lines of the Eastern and Western fronts; he was even awarded the Iron Cross for his daring trips along the front …show more content…

After he met a famous fighter pilot named Oswald Boelcke, he had a strong will to become a fighter pilot himself. Manfred trained hard and took his first solo flight on October 10, 1915. He crashed on his first solo flight, but he never gave up. By the end of 1915, Manfred was a certified fighter pilot. He soon joined a group of fighter pilots called The Fighter Squadron led by Oswald Boelcke. Manfred won his first victory on September 17, 1916; a victory is when a pilot shoots down an enemy plane. He was a very accurate shooter, and took few risks. Manfred used excellent tactics, often using the sun to hide while attacking an enemy from above. He also used other planes to protect himself from being attacked from behind or the side while he was attacking an enemy
