“I suppose John never was nervous in his life. He laughs at me about this wall-paper”(). This quote perfectly sums up the entire story and the period of time it was written in. The author, Charlotte Perkins Gilman was a female who served as a role model for women. “The Yellow Wallpaper” is her famous masterpiece. To write this short story, she was inspired by her postpartum depression that she had to overcome. The story of The Yellow Wallpaper mirrors the period where men dominated women and truly believed that women were nothing but an emotionally fragile things they could showpiece to the world. The story defines the traditional role of the 1800’s through the perspective of male dominated marriage.

From the beginning of the story, the theme of male dominance is seen. Although equally distressing to realize that this still is going on in the 21st century, giving this works a timeless quality, which is both unfortunate and insightful. The transparent level of disrespect John shows the narrator about her metal level is horrendous and frustrating to the point where John seems absolutely underserving of marriage, much less any kind of relationship with a woman. The following line opens the eyes to the reality of the narrator’s environment and also her own belief that she is not on an equal level as her husband. The narrator narrates “John laughs at me, of course, but one expects that in marriage”(9). “Even the name John itself is male dominating”(Ford 5). The name owes it popularity form two New Testament character, both highly reserved saints. ...ften bears fear imposing quality: exactly like man to a woman. Finally, the mansion the narrator is staying at is isolated and alone-symbolising the isolation of women back in the 18th century.

The narrator states"Sometimes I think there are a great many women behind [the wallpaper]," I don't like to look out of the windows even-there are so many of those creeping women .... I won­der if they all come out of that wall-paper as I did?"(15). This indicates that the story is not about one woman’s struggle for freedom. The Yellow Wallpaper tells the story of a all women who are oppressed by men, the isolation they feel are isolated in and the freedom they all struggle to achieve.
