The rhetorical devices used in the novel and her speech is the way her diction is used, imagery, exaggeration, pathos and ethos. Malala Yousafzai writes about how the girls in her country were being were being restricted from many rights including education. She speaks about her fears, her concerns, and her thoughts about what was happening around her. She also speaks about how she becomes stronger thought her experiencing of the horrible events that happened in her life. In the novel Malala Yousafzai uses her choice of words wisely to set the tone and the setting taking place. The diction she uses gives good imagery by the details given. As the author indicates “When I close my eyes, I can see my bedroom. The bed is unmade, my fluffy blanket in heap, because I rushed out to school, late for an exam. My school schedule is open on my desk to a page dated 9 October 2012. And my school uniform-my white shalwar and blue kamiz-is on a peg on the wall waiting for me”(Yousafzai, pg 1). The author indicates “I will admit that I used to be sensitive about my looks. My nose was too big. I had funny black spots on my face. My skin was too dark. Even my toes were too long” (Yousafzai,pg.145). She talks about how she always notice any flaw that she had with herself. But then she looked beyond and started to think about different things about the bullet wond. Malala then provides her curiosity afterwards by stating “But I look at this Malala in the mirror with nothing but curiosity. I was like a scientist studying a specimen. I wanted to understand exactly what had happened, where the bullet went, what exactly it had done. I was fascinated of what i saw” (Yousafzai, pg. 145).
