The notion of Bertrande de Rols in The Wife of Martin Guerre as having good intentions suggests not only that she was mindful of her own feelings in her pursuit of the truth, but also of the feelings of others. However, Bertrande’s intentions were to cleanse her soul and absolve herself from sin by indicting the impostor, Arnaud du Tilh. Yet, she undertakes this task considering the despair it would inflict upon the mesnie. These actions also are detrimental to Bertrande in causing her perhaps the most anguish and grief of all. Bertrande intends to uphold the status quo, yet she has due knowledge that pathway to the greater good will be harmful to her and the Mesnie.
Louise Bernice Halfe was born in 1953 in Two Hills, Alberta. Her Cree name is SkyDancer. She grew up a member of the Saddle Lake Reserve and at the age of 7 was sent to the Blue Quills Residential School in St. Paul, Alberta. . Arnaud du Tilh, a rogue and an impostor, deserved punishment for his crimes, and that is what he received. Arnaud, a man once thought by people to be unmistakably Martin Guerre, was sentenced to death. Perhaps in this day an age, a punishment such as this would be excessively severe, however in Arnaud's time it was considered just. A question can be asked whether Martin Guerre deserves such a punishment as well, because of his actions. Martin Guerre never broke any laws like that of Arnaud du Tilh, however in a moral sense, Martin's actions were down at Arnaud's level, perhaps even lower.
On July 18, 1926, Margaret Laurence was born to Scottish father, Robert Wemyss, and Irish mother Verna Simpson Wemyss. They lived in Mrs. Wemyss' hometown of Neewapa, Manitoba, until Margaret's move to Winnipeg in 1944. Margaret was but 4 years old when her mother died of a kidney infection. It was at this point that her aunt came to care for her and later marry her father. They were shortly thereafter moved into Margaret's grandfathers home. Margaret found living with her grandfather to be a very difficult task, and much of her writing in "A Bird in the House" reflects her relationship with her grandfather using the character Vanessa and her rough, uncaring grandfather. Like Margaret, the character Vanessa is an aspiring writer who is faced with many obstacles in her life. The grandfather-granddaughter relationship is one of the most prominent aspects reflected from Margaret's own life. Vanessa grandfather was oftentimes hard on her and the family, and showed lack of compassion and caring, in general. His rules were strict and always enforced, thought sometimes challenged by Vanessa. Margaret thought this of her grandfather until later in life, again, like Vanessa.
At the age of ten, most children are dependent on their parents for everything in their lives needing a great deal of attention and care. However, Ellen, the main character and protagonist of the novel Ellen Foster, exemplifies a substantial amount of independence and mature, rational thought as a ten-year-old girl. The recent death of her mother sends her on a quest for the ideal family, or anywhere her father, who had shown apathy to both she and her fragile mother, was not. Kaye Gibbons’ use of simple diction, unmarked dialogue, and a unique story structure in her first novel, Ellen Foster, allows the reader to explore the emotions and thoughts of this heroic, ten-year-old girl modeled after Gibbons’ own experiences as a young girl.
In 1938 modern novelist and physician, Dr. William Carlos Williams produces a novel “Jean Beicke” which may well be synonymous with his life, and his disposition with the society that emerged in the early twentieth century. The novel not only confers on the deprived state some of the children entering the pediatric hospital the narrator happened to work at. It also delves into the disposition the narrator (possibly other pediatricians) possesses over the neglectful nature of the child’s parents. Surely, this must reflect William’s worldview from a post-world-war standpoint, where the new generations of children are helplessly starving to the point of death. This degradation in human empathy may have been a direct result of either World War 2 or the great depression that followed. Although it does reflect a sense of hope and tenacity as the narrator attempts to overcome his/her prejudices and try to save the life of a young malnourished girl, Jean.

Frances (Fannie) Perkins was an amazing person that represented a strong image for the female race. She was the first female cabinet member in the United States. Frances Perkins was the most influential person in American history because if she hadn’t been the first U.S. female cabinet member, females may not have a role in the U.S. government.
Maxine Kumin is considered one of the best Jewish American poets of her time. She has won a Pulitzer Prize in 1973 for her work in Up Country. She has been compared to Anne Sexton, who was a fellow American confessionalist poet. Confessionalist poets tend to focus their poetry on personal matters that took place in their lives. For example, Kumin discusses the inner lives of her characters in her personal poems. She is considered a naturalist feminist because she gives her utmost importance to ecological things, such as plants, animals, the overall environment surrounding her. Kumin "asserts that her connection with animals is essential to her work as a poet, and later implies that through her association with them she has discovered a creatural self that is deeper and better than the human self" (Lyman, 23). To some she is not only ecological, but and ecological feminist. Unlike other confessionalist poets who wrote mainly about despair and depression, Kumin focuses her writing on happier things, such as family life, farming, subjects of life and nature, and loss. Her first published writings included Connecting the Dots, Nurture, Looking for Luck, Up Country: Poems of New England, The Long Approach, and House, Bridge, and Fountain Gate. She has been recognized for her tremendous work and the attention that she drew from women in the American society. Critics have even compared her work to Henry David Thoreau and Robert Frost. Kumin became an important figure in the feminist literary society.
A sadistic temptress, the aid and probable prompt of an evil and cold blooded killer. Or a 'political prisoner being used as a scapegoat by politicians and the media'? This is a very sensitive subject and people often respond with fear and anxiety when we decide to examine things like the Moors murders. We are told that our curiosity is 'unhealthy', and that wanting to know,or openly debate about a matter which is 'naturally' closed, can only be the desire of a sick mind. We are encouraged to turn a blind eye and leave well alone.
Center stage in Kaye Gibbons’ inspiring bildungsroman, Ellen Foster, is the spunky heroine Ellen Foster. At the start of the novel, Ellen is a fiery nine-year old girl. Her whole life, especially the three years depicted in Ellen Foster, Ellen is exposed to death, neglect, hunger and emotional and physical abuse. Despite the atrocities surrounding her, Ellen asks for nothing more than to find a “new mama” to love her. She avoids facing the harsh reality of strangers and her own family’s cruelty towards her by using different forms of escapism. Thrice Ellen is exposed to death (Gibbons 27). Each time, Ellen has a conversation with a magician to cope with the trauma (Gibbons 22-145). Many times Ellen’s actions and words cause it to be difficult to tell that she is still a child. However, in order to distract herself, Ellen will play meaningful games (Gibbons 26). These games become a fulcrum for Ellen’s inner child to express itself. Frequently, Ellen will lapse into a daydream (Gibbons 67). Usually, these daydreams are meant to protect herself from the harsh reality around her. Ellen Foster’s unique use of escapism resounds as the theme of Kaye Gibbon’s Ellen Foster.
Set in a futuristic dystopia Chicago there is a society that is divided into five factions: Abnegation; selflessness, Amity; peaceful, Candor; honest, Dauntless; brave, and Erudite; knowledgeable. Each represents a different virtue of living one’s life. The children of this society have to decide whether they want to stay in their faction or switch to another, the choice is theirs. The young Beatrice “Tris” Prior makes a choice that surprises everyone including herself. After what seems to be the wrong choice, Tris and her fellow faction members have to go through a very competitive training in order to live with their new faction. They must go through intense psychological tests and extreme physical training that can either transform them or destroy them. If they fail to complete their training successfully they will be left frictionless and an outcast to society. While the Dauntless train, the Erudite devolve a life threatening plan that is carried out that night. They developed a serum that stops the brain’s thought process and all of the Dauntless become sleeper soldiers for they were injected with it. The serum does not work on Tris or Tobias “Four” Eaton because they are both Divergent. When they try to escape they are both caught and brought to Jeanine, the Erudite leader. She then sentences Tris to death and Tobias is sent to the control room to view the attack. Tris is locked inside a glass tank that fills with water, but moments later her mother saves her life. ...
Maxine Kumin Maxine Kumin, who experienced many different views of the world through travel, feels the most comfortable in New Hampshire, her rural home. In any area that she travels, she always makes a similarity to her home, as expressed in her poems. In her poem, “The Long Approach”, she is driving in her Saab hatchback from Scranton to her farm in New Hampshire. She also discusses her plane ride back from Orlando to New Hampshire the week before. Throughout the poem she makes references back to the animals she cares for and comes in contact with on the farm.
Strong and outstanding Political and Feminist poet, Adrienne Cecile Rich, captivated her audience with her true and soft words. She is a prime example of uncovering hidden struggles for more than one community and responsible for delivering so many eye-opening pages to read. The most stable way to describe her tremendous gravitational pull would be to quote the woman herself, “Art means nothing if it simply decorates the dinner table of the power which holds it hostage”. She is a creative individual to me because of her courage with standing up for Women’s Rights for so long, and unveiling what should be in everyone’s line of view to begin with.
