Shakespeare is known for his plays to have many tragedies and also consist of tragic heroes. His famous play, Macbeth, is composed of numerous disastrous tragedies leading to the downfall of the main characters, but also bring forth tragic heroes. A tragedy is an event causing great suffering, destruction, and distress, such as a serious accident, crime, or natural disaster. A tragic hero is one who creates their own downfall by their own actions or judgement error. The tragic hero is typically a figure of high stature, and has a noble background. After the downfall, the tragic hero comes to the realization of what they have become, but this does not stop the death of the tragic hero. Due to his loyalty on the battlefield, he has earned titles such as Thane of Glamis and later, Thane of Cawdor. The King of Scotland, speaks high of Macbeth, unaware of the murderous schemes to come performed by Macbeth. He is notified of his succession to the throne by the witches, and with the provoking help of Lady Macbeth, he is lead to a violent path to the throne. Due to being a tragic hero, Macbeth suffers from numerous tragic flaws. His ambitious characteristics are a huge tragic flaw that helps him do whatever is possible to obtain the throne. Lady Macbeth, is also one of Macbeth’s flaws. He is easily manipulated and provoked by Lady Macbeth, his wife, to commit murder to gain power. These two factors led the character of Macbeth into tragedy. Due to persuasion and ambition, he is led into committing murder, thus sparking his downfall. After the murder, he is crowned King of Scotland, which leads to extreme paranoia of anyone who is in succession behind him. His paranoia leads to the death of four other characters. Macbeth then visited the witches to be informed that no man born of a woman could defeat him. Unaware that Macduff’s birth was a Caesarean section, Macbeth is killed by Macduff. His death allows the audience to see the full cycle of a tragic hero. Macbeth exhibits all of the characteristics of a tragic hero by his ambitions leading to tragedies to which lead to his greatest downfall,
