His famous play, Macbeth, is composed of numerous disastrous tragedies leading to the downfall of the main characters, but also bring forth tragic heroes. A tragedy is an event causing great suffering, destruction, and distress, such as a serious accident, crime, or natural disaster. A tragic hero is one who creates their own downfall by their own actions or judgement error. The tragic hero is typically a figure of high stature, and has a noble background. Due to his loyalty on the battlefield, he has earned titles such as Thane of Glamis and later, Thane of Cawdor. The King of Scotland, speaks high of Macbeth, unaware of the murderous schemes to come performed by Macbeth. He is notified of his succession to the throne by the witches, and with the provoking help of Lady Macbeth, he is lead to a violent path to the throne. Due to being a tragic hero, Macbeth suffers from numerous tragic flaws. His ambitious characteristics are a huge tragic flaw that helps him do whatever is possible to obtain the throne. Lady Macbeth, is also one of Macbeth’s flaws. He is easily manipulated and provoked by Lady Macbeth, his wife, to commit murder to gain power. These two factors led the character of Macbeth into tragedy. Due to persuasion and ambition, he is led into committing murder, thus sparking his downfall. After the murder, he is crowned King of Scotland, which leads to extreme paranoia of anyone who is in succession behind him. His paranoia leads to the death of four other characters. Macbeth then visited the witches to be informed that no man born of a woman could defeat him. Unaware that Macduff’s birth was a Caesarean section, Macbeth is killed by Macduff. In the beginning of the book, the main character Macbeth is a honorable man that stumbles upon 3 wicked witches that corrupt his mind. When Macbeth and the witches first meet, the witches tell him that he will be Thane of Cawdor, Thane of Glamis, and king, “All hail, Macbeth! Hail to thee, Thane of Glamis.”(17) The witch’s corrupt Macbeth’s mind with the fact that he can obtain these titles by doing certain things like killing Banquo to progress farther in his ranks. Toward the end of the book, Macbeth isn’t a bystander anymore, but an enemy to many to where he will be slain by a man who was not of woman born. During a battle, a man named Macduff comes and kills Macbeth, “And let the angel whom thou still hast served tell thee Macduff was from his mother’s womb untimely ripped.”(185) Macbeth became the evil that he stood by from in the beginning.

It has been argued for years whether Macbeth from Shakespeare’s, The Tragedy of Macbeth, can truly be considered a tragic hero or whether he is solely a villainous tyrant. Although there are some valid arguments for the Macbeth is pure evil viewpoint, by looking at Macbeth in a holistic way you can see the tragic, the heroic, and the tragic hero within him. Macbeth is awarded thane of Cawdor due to the switching sides of the original title holder who is hanged for treason.
